    Gibberish when opening a 97 file in 2000 (2000)

Get gibberish when open a Word 97 file (Times New Roman font) in Word 2000. Initially get "Choose the encoding to use for loading this file". None of the options work. Noticed a similar thread where they changed the extension from .doc to .hqx and opened from Winzip. This did not work for me. I also turned on confirm conversion at Open (Tools, Options, General Tab) and tried some of the options here when open file (i.e. convert file from text only). No go.
Tried opening the file in Notepad, etc. - no go.
A second file that I received from the same sender was a PowerPoint file. When I try to open it I get, "The Outline is too long to read in it's entirety." and gibberish. Noticed one thread like this in the Ppt section, where they assumed the file was corrupt.
Does anyone have any ideas on this?

Look in the Open dialog box under Files of type & make sure it isn't set to "recover text from any file".
    Cheers,

No, it's not. It's set to open Word docs.

It may be corrupt. Try the first 2 steps in <post#=197827>post 197827</post#>. If that doesn't work, look at Troubleshooting Damaged Documents

Are you positive it is coming from a PC running Word 97? The mention of encoding and hqx make it sound like it might be a Mac file or has been transmitted by email from a Mac.

You might like to post the file here so someone can have a go at opening it.
