Default Alignment of Page Numbers (2002 SR2)

Is there a way to change the default alignment of page numbers to center when using the Insert/Page Numbers command? It's obviously not hard to change it, but it would be nice not to have to change it every time! <img src=/S/wartgun.gif border=0 alt=wartgun width=73 height=24>

I tried opening the normal.dot , then modifying the style "page number" but paragraph format is not an available option.

    TIA

If you insert the page number as Phil recommended, it will be inserted as text instead of in a frame, thus making formatting a bit easier. If page numbers are generally the only thing you put in your footer, you can modify the Footer style so that it is centered. The reason the Page Number style does not have a paragraph formatting option is because it is a character style rather than a paragraph style - it applies only to the number itself and not to the paragraph which contains the page number. The character style Page Number is overlaid over the paragraph style Footer and will override any character formatting found in the Footer style, but will retain paragraph formatting from Footer.

Why don't you record a macro that opens the footer, inserts the page number, centers it, & returns to the insertion point. Then assign it to a shortcut key. As long as you're at it, you could insert the page number by using the header/footer toolbar. (I think it's preferable than putting the page number in a frame the way Insert/Page Numbers... does.) I don't know a way to change the hard coded Word page number dialog box to default to center.
