Run Scandisk 1st and see if that helps. One thing you could do is download a free trial version of Diskeeper
99% of the people on this forum will tell you Diskeeper is 10 times better then Win Defrag System. Try it and you will see.

The defrag ran much faster after I removed the option to make programs start faster, and I never noticed any difference to load times. In fact the systems became a little more stable.
However, I agree that third party defrags were miles, or kilometers, ahead of the Win98 option.
