Slowdown

Has anyone noticed a general response slowdown when viewing posts within the Lounge?
I think it is most noticeable for example, when I might read a post, then click on Control Panel, to go back where I started. Sometimes it's fine and reasonably fast, but other times it sits there for some time before it finally come up with the new page.

I don't seem to have any problems with other sites in so far as speed is concerned. They all seem to refresh or change without this time lag.
Any suggestions?

I too have the same problem exactly as you described. I thought that it may be my connection, never paid it much attention but it has been annoying at times.

Today has been a little slower than most. Did you happen to take a look at Who's Online? (I didn't think to look until now and now my speed is fine) Maybe at the time there were a lot more people hitting the site than usual. <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

KT,
It hasn't just been today, it has been at other times in an erratic pattern. I have also, checked users and it has happened when there were as little as 6 logged on, including annon's. Yet other times, there were 20 some odd on. I haven't noticed any particular time or any other thing that would indicate a pattern of some sort. <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20> I see a few others have been experiencing the same thing?

Yes, I have noticed it too recently. There seems to be no clear pattern. It happens at any time of the day, even when it is morning here in Europe; at that time, it is very late in the evening in Oz, and the middle of the night in the Americas, so the number of active users tends to be small.

Re: Slowdown

I guess I'll have to start paying attention to how many folks are logged in, 'cause I've noticed EXTREME slowdowns at random times of the day also. I just bit the bullet and went on to something else, thinking it was the normal vagaries of the 'Net. Mebbe not, huh?

Re: Slowdown

Just to chime in my two dings, yes, the connection has been slower, especially today. Occasionally, I'll log into the Lounge from my office (a T1 connection that's super fast), but today the screen just sat and sat there. I finally stopped the connection and went on to do something else (what I was supposed to be doing, in the first place).

Bob,

I've had other reports of slowness but haven't been able to track the cause of it. The internet speed (http://www.internettrafficreport.com/main.htm) figures aren't brilliant at the moment though, and I'm getting timeouts from serveral mail servers in the US. Something sure isn't as it should be. We'll keep an <img src=/S/eyeout.gif border=0 alt=eyeout width=15 height=15>
Cheers, Claude.

Re: Slowdown

I've had slowness to many websites that I frequent...even to one website (a Forum) that I haven't be able to access at anytime during the day today. I did a virus scan, degrag, and scandisk just on the off chance it was my computer...but with 40 sites that I visit...only 30 sites are 'normal' access...and I have cable. <IMG SRC=http://users.adelphia.net/~nanalonnie/images/Gifs/All/dunno.gif>

Re: Slowdown

Claude,
Thanks. I'll have to try to check net speed vs Lounge speed when I see this slowdown occur. Maybe there is a correlation, but as I said, I have had the slowdown, then tried other sites right away and they appeared to be normal? (whatever "normal" can be?) Hopefully, other people on the Lounge will also keep an eye on this anomaly and perhaps we can see something that can be tracked down.
I'm sure you will be on top of this.

Re: Slowdown

I echo earlier comments. I'm on at all hours, (e.g. 2:30am New York Time) and notice occasional slowdowns.

Yesterday's slowdown I tried to assign to my search - I was looking across all forums for the Entire Phrase "move or copy this item" prior to posting in Win98 - and figured that I'd gummed up the system by (a) searching all forums and ( using extremely common words in tandem.

My reasoning in ( was that if every word (in the Lounge) is indexed, then combining a search on common words would involve a great deal of activity on the database. I would anticipate that *I* might be delayed (while the search took place), but I wouldn't expect other users to be greatly delayed (unless they too decided to do a major search at that time). That is, a major database search didn't ought to slowdown a response to, say, a Preview or an Edit.

A method to test this hypothesis would be for users to submit a short message each time they noticed a slowdown (as described in the various posts above) and try to correlate these events in time with a log of searches being done at that time. If slowdowns peak at times when a search-all-forums for common-word strings is being performed, that would probably be the answer - the lounge is tied up with a massive database activity.

> T1 connection that's super fast

This suggests that the problem is unrelated to communicatiuons between your machine and the lounge. Since you were sitting doing nothing, then the slowdown MUST (?) be ON the lounge, no?

Re: Slowdown

> "erratic pattern" and "as little as 6 logged on"

... both suggest that it is activity ON the lounge, rather than anything else. That is, it's not so much "how many are logged on" as "what they are doing", and it's not so much "the time of day" but "what piqued their curiousity".
