Counting X in 2 different columns (Excel 97)

I hope I can explain this so it makes sense. I have created a worksheet with multiple columns. There are 5 column headers that have telephone prefixes, i.e. 224, 555, 676, 881, 992. Then there are 2 columns with the headers "No one on line" and "Conversation". The row headers are the time of day.

There will be an entry (an X) in one of the prefix columns, that lines up with the time of day the call was received. Then I will put an X under the column that corresponds to that entry, either the No one or Conversation.

My question is, is there a function or macro to count the number of 224 prefixes that have No one on line and the number of 555 prefixes that have Conversation (for example)?

    Thank you for your help.

Say that the 224 prefix is in column B, No one on line is in column G, and the times in rows 2 to 18. The number of 224 prefixes that have "No one on line" is
    =SUM((B2:B18="x")*($G$2:$G$18="x"))
entered as an array formula, i.e. confirm with Ctrl+Shift+Enter instead of just Enter.

    See attached workbook.

Jan Karel or Steve will undoubtedly come up with a better solution.

You are an absolute genius. Now, it seems so simple after you showed me, but I have been working for days on this. I love you!!!!!! <img src=/S/love.gif border=0 alt=love width=15 height=15>
