    can't logon anymore!

    Hello.
I have created a problem for myself - I hope someone can help. I will be moving house soon, and planned to take a Win2k machine to the new house and set it up with an ISDN connection there so I can read my email until I move all my PCs to the new location. The Win2k machine normally logs onto an NT4 domain here. So, I thought I'd tell it to ignore the network; in the LAN connection properties I told it it was now to logon to a workgroup instead of the domain (couldn't find a way to tell it there was no network anymore). On rebooting, it won't accept my password - safe mode doesn't help either. I seem to have locked myself out, and just can't get past the logon prompt. What on earth do I do now? If I have not made myself clear please let me know. There must be some way to start the win2k machine as a not-networked PC? Help!
    TIA
    Robin

    Re: can't logon anymore!

    Hi Robin,

first, you should have left it as it was, the 2k machine would have used the cached info if it wasn't connected to a/the network. The only thing you can do now is login as Administrator to the local machine ie

    User: Administrator
    Password: *******
(the third line should say) <machine name> (this computer)

    Lemme know if this helps

    Mike,

thanks for your response. I'm afraid it's not that easy. I can't imagine what made me do something so stupid, but I've disabled the LAN connection (in Properties) and the logon prompt now just has two fields, ie user and password. No place to choose the local computer or a domain or anything. The Administrator account won't let me logon either. Am I doomed to a reinstall?

    Robin

Later... I did the reinstall - and have learned my lesson!

Sorry Robin, never seen a 2k box you couldn't login to with the admin password. I'm gonna try to replicate the problem jujst for my own knowledge. I'll let you know.

    Robin,
You are using the local machine administrator account right? Not the NT 4 domain administrator account.

    Re: can't logon anymore!

    Joe,

yes indeed. Meanwhile, I have reinstalled win2k and thankfully nothing important is lost - in fact it's all a lot snappier than before! I believe my main mistake was that I disabled the LAN connection (in Properties); still a puzzle that the administrator account wouldn't let me in either. I got the standard message telling me to check caps lock and try again, and I'm certain I got the password right (well *almost* certain..). Needless to say, I have experimented with the fresh installation with and without the network and it all works as it should. Next time I'll be more careful! Thanks for your time,
    Robin

    Robin,
You're welcome. Glad you solved it without too much pain. File that admin password away someplace safe.
