Someone told me that there is a way to display a message to a user when he/she logs on. It's supposed to be somewhere in the registry but I don't have a clue where? Does anyone have any ideas where I might find this?

Re: Login Messages

OK I was able to get it to work for my user account .Go to Start, Run, type in msg X { X being the user name} press enter. a box will come up. Type your message , at the end of the message press enter to go to the next line down like you were going to start a new sentence and press Ctrl+Z, to end message, and then push enter.
I can't figure out how to get it to go to the other user account.

We're on a Novell network with a few Win 98 and Win 2000 PCs and a lot of NTs. I don't want to use Novell scripting. I want something to pop up when these folks get onto our systems be that through the network or through a workstation only.

OK - have a look at JSI Tip 0024 - Logon Welcome/Legal Notice which I think will do your NT4's.

If that's the sort of thing you are after, there is a link for W2K at the bottom of that page - I'm not too sure about W98 . . . .

Re: Login Messages

Leif : I use WinXP. Doing it the way I showed above I was able to get it to pop the message up on the account I was loged on to, but not the account I wasn't loged on to. I'm not real good with the Syntex thing , so I may not be doing something right.

Do you mean in post 234968?
I'm not exactly sure what you are trying to achieve there.
How can you know what is happening in an account if you are not logged into it?

Re: Login Messages

What I mean is that I can't figure out how to create the message from the account I'm logged in on to show up on the other account when they log in on it. { Network }
I have three computers Networked at home. Mine is WinXP , the other two are Win2000. And yes I do mean 234968. It's not something I just have to have. I just thought it would be cool to know how.

Thanks! This is EXACTLY what I was looking for. Too bad about Win 98 and 95. Oh, well!

Re: Login Messages

I'm afraid I don't follow what you are doing with the "msg X" bit above - if the 'other two are Win 2000', use the JSI tip I linked to above.

Re: Login Messages

Heck, I don't follow what I'm doing eather. Just ran across it. It does put a message on the screen when you type it in and push enter. But thats like writing yourself a message. Can't see much use in that yet untill I start forgetting everything from one minute to the next. Then it might come in handy. By the way, what was we talking about.?

Re: Login Messages

That's cool, thanks.

My is that we use generic sign-ons for certain areas due to shift work and shared terminals. I would need some way to force the user to "sign" in acknowledgement, then some way to track who has and hasn't signed. Guess there life in paper based systems yet!

BTW, I'm not fishing for a solution just my .

Re: Login Messages

If you use X-Setup it lets you change the Legal Notice and Login Window caption and text for NT, 2K and XP. For 9x and ME only the Legal Notice is available.
