I think it's a lot easier to just re-install it from the cd

Re: force Office 97 to Install on Win XP (win xp office 97)

I tried to reinstall Office 97 and it even acts like it does and then when I click on the program it says "the program must be installed; please run setup from the location where it was installed" so I even did it again and nothing works; I thought I read enough that Office 97 would work with XP now I just wish I never had Windows XP; thanks; a person told me maybe I could format my drive and go back to WIN98 & Office 97 and then try the upgrade version of XP; I did clean install of Win XP as I thought it would be better, but the only thing it did was mess up Office...looks like all my other stuff is still there and I thought I was "cleaning" it off...thanks for listening

I use 97 with xp no probs. I did have some problems trying to do an upgrade install, though. If it "looks like all my other stuff is still there" then you didn't really do a clean install.

XP can format, set up partitions, and change from fat32 to ntfs from the setup disk. Make sure you're ready to wipe the disk (everything backed up?), and try it again. Once you have formatted, install windows, and then install Office 97. Works just fine. Do you have more than one partition, maybe, and only formatted c:?.

Anyway feel free to ask if you need more help

And, if I had to choose which one to stick with, I'd sure choose Windows XP for all its improvement over Win98. I say that with all due respect that I don't know WHAT you would have to pay for a newer version of Office. I bet if you shop around the web, you could find an inexpensive place to buy something like Office 2000 if you don't want to go all the way to the latest.

Hi Al, you are quite right, MS Office Professional Suite 2000 is going very cheap now that 2003 is about to be released, particularly if only the "upgrade" version is required. Though I do have a combination on my machine of Word 2000, the rest of the suite is 97, all are working just fine. Lots of folks I know have the same combination on XP Home and XP Pro, they all say everything is works well. Maybe we are just lucky.. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>
