Losing the Word Template (Word 97 Win98)

I am constantly losing the template for Word. I have a shortcut to open word and it will last for some time then, without warning, I can't open a new Word document with the shortcut or the program icon. I used information from MS and followed the directions which are - find the template (Normal.dot), change the name and move on. That really doesn't work for me. What works is I create a Word document, save it as a new Normal.dot and then delete the old templates and I am back in business. But in a few weeks I have lost it again. This is getting to be a true problem. What is causing this and how can I "permanently" fix it? Thanks for any and all ideas.

Although Normal.dot can become corrupt, it is improbable that it would do so frequently, unless something else (for instance an add-in) is modifying it. Try Phil Rabichow's <!post=Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word (Word 97/2000),197827>Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word (Word 97/2000)<!/post>.

Why don't you have your shortcut point to winword.exe instead of normal.dot.
