Where are the XP fonts? (XPP, SP-1)

This is an enjoyable question because it isn't a problem. I recently upgraded from Corel 9 to Corel 11 which carries a very good Bitstream Fonts Navigator. This little app finds every font in your hard drive and lists it in the left side of a box on the screen. On the right side are installed fonts. To uninstall you just grab the unwanted font and move it to the left. To install, do the opposite. Neat. Which means that it's possible to operate in typesetting and graphics with very few fonts actually installed. That saves memory and lets it all run faster.

Well, to cut to the chase, I slimmed down my installed fonts drastically. And in that make my poor old buddy XP dumb and blind. I found a group of MS*.* fonts and installed them which made XP happy. But then noted that my Netscape had gone dumb, too. Hmm. Figured that one out. But the question is, where do you select which fonts XP throws up on its various dialog boxes, title bars, etc?

That's information that will let me put a few favorite fonts up where I just have these ho-hum little letters.

Right-click an empty area of the desktop.
Select Properties from the popup menu.
In the Display Properties dialog, select the Appearance tab.
Click Advanced.
Cycle through the entries in the Item dropdown list. You will be able to see/select the font used for various parts of the screen.
Note: not all items have a font setting. For example, Desktop hasn't, but Active Title Bar does.

Hans,
Right, but I knew about that setting. What I'm looking for may not exist but it's a step higher in the architecture than the screen you pointed out. That screen controls size of the fonts but now which font displays. Netscape and, perhaps IE, give you a choice for virtually every font that shows on the browser screens. This one or this script or some fun.

I've checked every book on the shelf and there's nothing in the XP help file. Perhaps it's just out of reach.

Bill,

I can set the font for the following items:

Active Title Bar
Icon
Inactive Title Bar
Menu
Message Box
Palette Title
Selected Items
Tooltip

In the Windows Classic Theme, with the Windows Standard color scheme, these are all set to Tahoma, but you can change them individually, although some of the items are linked. Active Title Bar and Inactive Title Bar always have the same font, as have Menu and Selected Items.

My friend,

You say, "these are all set to Tahoma, but you can change them individually" yet you don't say how. I went back there, a good and compliant little student, but I fail to find any method for changing the font. During the course of cleaning out my font files, I had uninstalled Tahoma which was the point that left XP quite muddled. I recognized and remembered that Tahoma was needed though it is as plain and unexciting as any font I know. As we speak, I've been tempted to find something neat -- Benguiat, say -- and rename it 'Tahoma.' That'll hold the little twerps.

But you indicate a more civilized way, which I applaud. I should introduce you to our president and learn if you can pacify him, too.

Aloha, Bill ~

All of your system fonts are stored in C:WindowsFonts. The area Hans pointed out does in fact have a drop-down list whereby which font selection is available of every such installed in aforementioned folder for virtually every dialog box, titlebar, etc. Below, for example, you can see I have selected 'Mistral' for my menu font and 'Exotc350' as my titlebar font of my browser screen.

A few KB articles which may shed some light:
310543 - How to Change the Font, Size, and Colors of Desktop Items

282187 - Overview of MS Shell DLG and FontSubsitutes

314960 - HOW TO: Install or Remove a Font in Windows XP

- the last one includes a list of default (and perhaps therefore minimum?) installed fonts.

Bruce,

Thank you, but why do I always have to have a picture? At my advanced age you would think it possible for me to figure out the conundrums Hans poses without having to drag you out of bed at this uncomfortable hour to explain things to me. My main problem in life is that I almost never hit any button with "Advanced" written on it. Terrified of what that might bring up on my screen.

But, while I'm at it, thank you very much, Hans and Bruce, for your usual guidance to the path of wisdom and worth.

To me buttons labelled "Advanced" are a bit like "Confidential" stamps on documents - an invitation to discover something interesting. And they can foster new skills development, like being able to read upside down text .

The main difference in me and most of the good folks on Woody's Ranch is that they are smart and I'm just way behind the pitch. I can, however, read upside down. Learned it in the many years I was a reporter standing in amazement as the Governor or an equal miscreant left documents out while talking to me. He was probably thinking I was listening to him rather than memorizing the 'deals.'

But 'advanced' is another matter. Just not for the likes of me, I figger. Sort of like peeking into the registry where the gnarlies hang out just waiting to jump out of their cage and into otherwise protected memory. Or something like that.

My XP -- without being asked -- installed all the fonts on my hard drive! Which is why my system couldn't show me any words this morning. Had to go in and delete all the duplicate fonts installed.

Now there is no good reason for that. If you have a ttf and a type1 font of the same name installed, neither show in any app. With both folders of all my ttf and type1 folders installed, there was a lot of work for me this morning before my second cuppa coffee. Disgusting!
