    Right click slowdown (XP/SP1)

When I right click any file, it's like six seconds before a drop-down menu appears. Response to any of the File and Folder tasks are much faster. Any idea what's wrong? This is on a Pentium III 866 MHz Dell with 512 KB memory. My home computer, a 1 GHz Dell with 256 kb drops the menu instantly.

Are those shared folders or any unused mapped drives.

    Re: Right click slowdown (XP/SP1)

Just checked, and none of the folders I'm having problems with are shared. Most of the files that open slow are in My Documents. I did have some duplicated mapped drives, and I disconnected them. Didn't make any difference. This computer was used by others before me, when it still had '2000 on it. At some point, I notice, it created me as anpam.000, and left anpam on the computer. There are also profiles for about four previous users. Is is safe to dump those after I offload all the data in them? Could they be causing the problem?

A little more checking and I'm not so sure. When I go to Computer Management, I discover that the C: path is shared for administrative purposes as C$. Is this normal?

Pat that I'm not sure about that, but it never hurts to try. Don't need those anyway.

Pat, Yes you can delete those 'old' profiles. You have to user profiles one with a .000 most likely becuase you logged into a domain/ad with that user name. That would create one profile. Then you created a local user of that same name which would create the second profile with the .000. The order could be reversed - i.e. the local first then the network.

Pat, just thought of something else. You should check the local users applet and delete the 'old' names if they are local.

Are your files NTFS? One fellow nerd told me that XP likes NTFS and failure to feed your machine what it likes to digest can cause delays while it burps.
