    Duplicate drive listing in Explorer

Recently, my Explorer in Win98 SE started displaying duplicate entries for my CD reader in the LH panel after I used it. With a completely clean install of Win98 SE last week, I often had three separate items showing for the one drive--but only in the LH panel. Any ideas on how to tame the beast?

    Thanks in advance, Geoff

Duplicate CD-ROM drives can occur when the DOS mode CD-ROM driver, MSCDEX, is being loaded into the startup file autoexec.bat. To fix the problem, remove any line that references MSCDEX from autoexec.bat.

You may be right, Cowboy, but I'm not sure that's it. We'll have to wait to see if he does have the entry. On the other hand, I think it's something in Explorer, because it's still around (occasionally) in Windows XP. I don't know if there's a fix floating around the web anywhere - to be honest, it happens so seldom that I haven't taken time to go looking. It usually IS with CD or burner drives for some reason - you put in a disk and acces it and Explorer wants to leave this "ghost" in the left pane. I dunno what it is. In my case (XP) it always goes away on its own or after a reboot.

Yeah Doc I'm not sure . It's the only thing I could find on the net.

Good job Leif. I guess I didn't have my dang wording right when I was doing my search.

Re: Duplicate drive listing in Explorer

Thanks for all the suggestions but here is the crazy solution.

mscdex was not loading via autoexec.bat but I was able to get three ghosts all proclaiming the title of a CD that was recently read in the drive. I had to close Explorer to eliminate the ghosts.

I realised that it was a fairly recent occurrence and thought about the video driver. I have replaced the nVidia driver 41.09 with ver 30.82 and the problem appears to have disappeared along with the other problem that I posted in the Office lounge about being unable to get the Office Toolbar to display on top when configured to sit in the window Title Barand always on top.

    Thanks again, Geoff
