Inserting check boxes outside a margin (2002 SP-2)

I am creating a big list with check boxes; I insert the check boxes from the Forms toolbar.

I would like to place the check boxes outside the left margin and parallel to each number.

But can the check boxes -- or anything for that matter - be placed outside the left margin? If so, how?

    Thanks!

Yes you can place things outside the left margin. (1) You could use a paragraph with a minus figure for the left indent - you could set that and a hanging indent to bring subsequent lines of the paragraph into line with the margin. (2) You could place the material in a text box or frame positioned in the left margin. We do this regularly at work for training manuals that have a wide left margin and marginal references in the margin. We use frames rather than text boxes, partly because they grow vertically automatically as extra lines of text are added. The frame in the margin is saved as a bit of autotext, so you can just click a button on the toolbar to insert it. (3) You could use a table with the first column in the margin and the second column starting where the margin would be.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Ian,

They all sound complicated; what do you suggest? I'm attaching the document; I need a check box for every number.

    Thanks!

    Hi Jon:
Enclosed is your document modified. For the first 6, I inserted a frame in the left margin & put checkboxes in them. You can make the border invisible by right clicking the border & choosing Format/Frame. Then set the border to none. You could also use a text box. Opposite 7, I used a table, without borders, as suggested above. I did not use the indented hanging indent paragraph because your paragraphs are numbered. If they were unnumbered, you could substitute a box for a bulleted list. It's a little unwieldy to use a checkbox & a number.
    Cheers,

    Phil,

    Thanks so much for that.

I prefer the checkbox format opposite #7.

You said you did this by inserting a frame; how do I do this?

    Thanks again!

Phil is not online at the moment, so ...

For #7, Phil created a table (not a frame) with two columns:

    Table/Insert/Table...
    Number of columns: 2
Number of rows: one for each check box

    Make the first column narrow.
Get the first column into the left margin, either by dragging the table to the left, or by selecting Table/Table Properties... and setting the Left Indent to a negative number.

Place the check boxes in the left column and the text in the right column.

Thanks, Hans; that's what I needed!

    Best,
