    Upgrading Office 97 (Office 97 Pro/Std various)

As a company we are about to embark on an upgrade of our Office version. we currently use a mixture of Office97 Std / Office97 Pro / individual Excel and Word installs. with the exception of Outlook that we install as 2000.

We are 50% through upgrading our Servers from NT4 to 2000 and we use Exchange 5.5 currently (in the mid - long future we are going for Exchange2000). we have 400+ installations on all sorts of machines - PCs, laptops from 4 years old to new. Some users will probably need introduction / training even if there are not that many differences.

what would be the best upgrades?

Our current thinking is to go for Office2000 but would anyone recommend OfficeXP or Office11? if we do are there any pitfalls that we should keep a look out for?

    any comments welcomed.

I'm not even sure Microsoft will still sell you an upgrade to 2000 - they may pretty much insist you go to XP. Outlook 2002 is a better product than 2000 IMHO, and more stable as well. Word on the other hand is definitely a mixed bag - the track changes stuff and the changes to mail merge didn't please lots of people. Excel has some nice improvements, as does Access, though neither is compelling improvement. Apps do generally seem more stable, and if they do crash, you can often recover what you were working on. Office 11 is still largely an unknown - for large organizations we typically recommend waiting for the first SR, though it was a long wait for Office XP. I'll be curious to see what others have to say.

Although I have used Office 2000 for a while now, and think it's generally quite good, I hesitate to endorse migrating to it now. Given your very long upgrade cycle, you probably should install XP now (subject to a lot of tweaking to make it comfortable for your users) so that you end up fewer generations behind five years from now.

Of course, check with the vendors of your document management system and other interoperating software to make sure they have worked out the kinks in their support for Office XP before reaching a final decision...

Our site, only around 35 users, when from O97 to XP with few problems. Being in hospitality I have a range of user levels from power to "which button do I press next'. I'd go with the XP even at a larger site, especially as you seem to have the same "problem" I have in having a longer cycle time for your Office products. Incidentally I was unable to source O2000 when I did my upgrade some 12 months ago.

You won't be able to get Office 2000 except places like eBay, so go with XP. The differences are not great, but XP has cured a few problems that 2000 had and generated a few of its own. The main thing is, you can still buy XP, at least until Office 11 is finally released. <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

Re: Upgrading Office 97 (Office 97 Pro/Std various)

    guys, thanks for the thoughts,

we change our licences as we rotate our inventory. as a new item is purchased we obtain the most up to date Office licence for it. when installing the software we 'downgrade' it and install Office97 where appropriate. this leaves us with licences that cover all of our users at various levels of Office - we hold licences as some still O97, most O2K and a few now are coming in as OXP but installed software goes like mostly(90%+) O97, some O2K, nil OXP. in order to move everyone to OXP we will have to spend a large amount of money.

In order to make this worthwhile i need to identify the one 'must have' function and as yet i cant see one. there do not appear to be any great benefits for the user or the administrator in OXP over O2K. can you think of any other than the fact that we will be going thrugh this process in a few years time when O2K is falling off the back of the shelf? the one saving grace is that by that time we will have the licences in hand but there will be 3 or 4 other Office versions to dither about !!

    still confused and unsure.
