    Slow Boot Again (XP Home)

XP takes near forever to get started. I spends a LOT of time with the splash screen greyed out before the screen brightens and gets on with it. This is not the same with other XP users. I've cleaned out the Start Menu items and Task Manager shows no tasks running at system start but lots of 'Processes'. I don't know how to handle them but what I did find is a folder WINDOWS/PREFETCH with a goodly number of my programs listed. Can someone tell me, and all others, the meaning/use of all that data? My suspicion is that 'stuff' influences my poor boot startup time. Thoughts anyone?
