    Illegal Operation (Office 200 SR-1)

I'm getting illegal operation error messages when opening a spreadsheet created in office 97. Is there a way of preventing this? Some users accessing this file are still using office 97. Any suggestions welcomed.

Your screen shot shows that an error occurred in VBE6, so the workbook probably contains macros. Apart from that, it's hard to say what happens. If you can do some experimenting together with an Excel 97 user, you could try to narrow the problem down to a specific worksheet or macro/function in the workbook, by successively removing bits and pieces in Excel 97 until you can open the workbook in Excel 2000.
If the workbook contains no sensitive data, you may attach it (straight or in a zip file) to a post, so that Loungers can investigate it (the attached file should be below 100 KB).

First thing that I would try would be to start Excel. Then select Open from the File menu and navigate to the file that is causing the problem and select the file. Hold down the Shift key and click Open to open the file. If the file opens, then the problem is in an Auto macro in the workbook.

The error message I posted previously was from a pc running Win98. I have tried it on a pc running Win2k and get a message stating that excel.exe has generated errors and will be closed.
Even opening the file from within excel whilst holding down the shift buttons generates the same message.
I have attached the file for inspection. Thanks

Excel 2002 SP-2 also crashes on opening the workbook (even with Shift held down), then restarts with a repaired version. The repair log says (translated from Dutch into English):

The Visual Basic project was lost.
    Some ActiveX objects were lost.

I have attached the repaired version. It's smaller than the original, but it's hard to say what causes this. Excel 2002 seems to produce smaller files than Excel 97.

I was able to open the file using OpenOffice. (www.openoffice.org)
Resaving as Excel file created a file with the same error though.
If I remove all code in OpenOffice, Excel will then open the file.

Obviously, the corruption was in one of the code modules of this file.
