    Controlling text boxes (Word2000/WinMe)

Is there any way to control the content of linked text boxes, in the way you would use a Ctrl-Return to force a page break normally?

I ask because I have produced an A5, 16-page brochure for a client who insists they want to print it themselves and that it had to be laid out on normal pages so they could just print the even pages then put the paper back and print the odd pages (or vice versa) - I know there are better ways of doing this but they insisted. In order to get the pages in order and allow for their habit of changing things on a frequent basis I put the lot in linked textboxes, which worked like a charm.

Until I discovered that different printer drivers' ways of treating fonts would completely screw up the layout because as far as I can tell there is not equivalent to Ctrl-Return (a page break) and the repeated Returns used to make the next page start in the right place would move all over the place when set up under one printer driver and printed under another.

I am in the process of setting my machine up with the client's printer driver to try to circumvent this, but I would be much happier if I could find a better way of controlling the text!

Any help would be gratefully appreciated!

You may be able to achieve the layout you need by using Keep With Next paragraph format on the first few paragraphs of each text box?

That's a good possibility - I'll have a go at that one tonight! Thanks, Stuart

Hi Stuart, sorry it took me so long to get back to you - among other things I suddenly became an auntie nearly a month sooner than expected!

Unfortunately using 'keep text together' or 'keep with next' doesn't work - I don't think Word sees the textboxes as being separate pages, so it doesn't worry about breaking paras over them. <img src=/S/sigh.gif border=0 alt=sigh width=15 height=15>

I can't believe there isn't some way to do this, though! And I really do need to find it ...

    Hi Beryl:
I'm not sure I can help, but...just some thoughts. Is there some reason that you have to use linked textboxes? I'm not sure how that solved the problem in the first place. Does it help if you lock the text box anchors?

It seems to me that in a long document, Word will print differently with different printers. That's one reason why many people use PDF.

    Re: Controlling text boxes (Word2000/WinMe)

Hi Phil, thanks for that - yes, the second para in my original post explains why I had to do it that way originally, and having done it that way, I'm certainly not going to start all over again unless I find a damn good reason to!

I have thought of the bit about different printers, and have got details of their printers so I can lay it out to fit them, although this still seems risky to me.

The only other thing I've been able to think of is to take a copy and deliberately unlink the text boxes - a bit fiddly, I know, since you have to do it in a particular order, removing the content of each one, unlinking it and putting it back in afterwards (at least that's the only way I know of to do it!), but I can't think of another way ...

Unless anyone out there knows any different (and I really do hope someone does!)

Since you are manually setting the point at which you flow to the next text box anyway (by using lots of carriage returns), why not just unlink the text boxes in the first place and place the text where you want it.

Yes, that's effectively what I'm going to have to do, but I'm going to do it on a copy because when they change it next time I don't want to have to connect it all up again first!
