Suppression of Print Queuing Message

O/S: Win 2000 Pro

Does anyone know of a way to suppress the print queuing messages that quickly flash on and off the screen when a document is queued to a printer? My client reports that his staff finds them annoying.

Reports are queued both locally on this machine (call it A) and also by a second machine on the network (call it . There doesn't seem to be a problem when B queues to a printer on A -- only when A queues to a local printer.

I saw an option called "printer notifications" under print server properties but I'm not sure that is relevant.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Re: Suppression of Print Queuing Message

I'm using Win2K and can't seem to *make* it prompt me when something is queued to the printer. I tried turning on the notification option in print server properties, and nothing happened.

Perhaps it is something specific to their printer or their network setup?

Sorry I couldn't help...

Thanks for the reply.

It's not a prompt that appears. It is the standard Windows queuing message (I don't know how else to refer to it) that says "Now printing page 1 of report-name to the ...".

Are we talking about printing reports from Word? It sounds like they have turned OFF background printing on one of the PCs. Have them do Tools-Options-Print and turn background printing on if it is off.

Hope that helps!

No, we are not printing from Word. The printing is being done from within an Access VBA application but the message that briefly appears is the same as the message that appears when printing from Word, Excel or any other app.

Thanks.

Help us out a little more.
What type and model of printer is this and which machine is this printer attached to?

What is the OS on EACH machine?

What network are you using?

What is the version of the drivers for this printer on each machine?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

If it's specifically for Access, you'll find a hack in API: Suppress the "Printing" Dialog. It ain't pretty, though.

Re: Suppression of Print Queuing Message

As I mentioned in my initial post, the OS is Win 2K Pro on both machines. The printer is a Star TSP 743 thermal restaurant printer (parallel model).

There are two machines on the network. They are both connected to a Siemens router which is connected to a DSL modem. The networking is accomplishing using Windows file / printer sharing

I am unable to get the precise driver used at this moment as the machines are currently in production use. They are located in another city and I access them via pcAnywhere. If you still need the exact driver name, I can get that information tomorrow.

Thanks.

I took a quick look at that hack. You're right -- it ain't pretty!

Frankly, the amount of time that the dialog flashes on the screen is infinitesimal and does not require a user response but the client doesn't like it. Just looking at that API quickly, it sounds as if if it were implemented, it might flash on the screen for longer than it currently does.

Thanks.

I think HansV (above) has answered your problem, if this does NOT happen when other programs are used.

Re: Suppression of Print Queuing Message

It does happen when other programs are used . However, they only use an Access app that we wrote for production purposes. It's apparently not bothersome to them when they do anthing else.

Thanks.
