linking to outline numbers (2002 SP1)

I'm documenting some procedures for my department, and I'm using Word's outline numbering. It's working just fine, but whenever I insert a step, the numbers after it change, naturally. Then I have to go through the rest of the document to check all the references to those numbers that have changed and update them. Is there a simple way to automate this, so that the references update themselves?

Take a look at Insert/Reference/Cross Reference... You can insert cross references to numbered items, headings, ..., and specify whether you want to display the number, or the text, etc.
This type of cross reference will update itself, or you can update by selecting everything and pressing F9.
