What do the Applications and Processes tabs in Task Manager say when this Media Player OLE2 Server is playing? Can you find out which exe it is?

    Strange Media player

Has anyone ever heard of 'Media Player OLE2 server'??

I saved an '.avi' file locally and when it is played, it plays in 'Media Player OLE2 server'. This is not online. Now, all my '.avi' files are associated with the Windows Media Player and still are, but this one particular file is not and has a different icon. A google turns up only one item of no value.

I haven't downloaded any add'l players and have never heard of 'Media Player OLE2 server', but it seems that my system knows of it despite my failing to find the executable that launches it.

I am curious where this resides and why I have never heard of it. Any ideas??

    Re: Strange Media player

    Hi, Hans ~

    It uses 3 processes:

wowexec.exe
mplayer.exe
nt vdm.exe[/list]They are in this order and the first two are indented or tabbed. I do know that 'wowexec.exe' and 'ntvdm.exe' are used for running 16-bit apps.

So, this '.avi' is 16 bit and thus calling up the 16-bit version media player?? And why by the odd name?

    Hi Bruce,

You've probably found In Windows NT, 2000, and XP, what are NTVDM and WOW? yourself by now. Your .avi must indeed be a relic from Windows 3.x. Wowexec and ntvdm are compatibility programs to run 16-bit apps.

I have no idea where the name "Media Player OLE2 server" comes from.
