    AccessXP and Access97 (Acc 97 sr2 on 95b)

We are about to upgrade (welcome but forced) from win95 Office97 to XP. We are moving from under a public company to private ownership and the pennies will be tight. The boss wants to only upgrade some of the 7 networked machines at this point. I am running a b/f end system.

Will accessXP talk to the 97 backend ok?
I realise that this means that no db editing can be done in XP or the old machines will lose access to the back end.
Can anyone think of any other possible problems?

Has anyone had problems running A97 on Win2000Pro? It was suggested that we set up a little server using this, but I remember that we had a lot of corruption problems when we had 1 machine here running 2000, mainly report and form caused.

Make sure you have the latest service packs for everything (Office 97, Jet Engine, Windows 2000). You can use an Access 97 backend with Access 97 and 2002 front ends, although perfomance will not be brilliant. As long as your Office XP users don't try to open the Access 97 backend directly (instead of through the Access 2002 frontend), there should be no serious problems.

    Hello,
We ran all of our Access 97 databases on Windows 2K with no problems prior to the Office XP conversion. Still have a couple with 97 backends and all work well. We faced your dilemna last July and survived fine.

    Good luck,
    Diane

There's one thing to watch out for that I know about, and that is the problem of autonumber seeds not resetting to the next highest number after you compact. This problem turned up in Access 2000 and was cured in O2k SR-1. Then Microsoft uncured it again with Jet 4.0 service pack 4 and higher. <img src=/S/hairout.gif border=0 alt=hairout width=31 height=23>
