The following is a list of some of the "hidden" files and directories in a FrontPage web. With some discussion of their purposes. Some of this is from MS technical course material on FP97. As far as I know, none of this has changed in subsequent versions. If you have any information about the red flagged material, please post. We will make a reference useful for all of us.
<table border=1><td>_private</td><td>This is for pages that should not normally be visible to browsers. Pages in this directory are not put into the global text index for the web so they will not be returned by the search WebBot.</td><td>_vti_cnf</td><td>For every page, there is a corresponding page in the _vti_cnf folder. This contains a set of name-value pairs, such as the last author to modify the page. Every page has one of theis files whether or not it is an HTML file. These files will be recreated by FP if they are deleted.</td><td>_vti_pvt/_x_todo.htm</td><td>The To Do List for the web.</td><td>_vti_pvt/_x_todoh.htm</td><td>The To Do List history for the web.</td><td>_vti_pvt/Deptodoc.btr</td><td>The dependency database for the web.</td><td>_vti_pvt/Doctodep.btr</td><td>The dependency database for the web.</td><td>_vti_pvt/Service.cnf</td><td>The Meta information for the web, inclucing the parameters from the Web Settings dialog box. Be prepared to cry if you lose this.</td><td>_vti_pvt/Services.cnf</td><td>This file is only in the root web. It contains a list of the web sites's child webs.</td><td><font color=red>_vti_pvt/botinfs.cnf</font color=red></td><td>Here is a sample of the kind of information to be found in this file:
vti_encoding:SR|utf8-nl
C:Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedWeb Server Extensions40botsvinavbarvinavbar.inf:VW|vinavbar
So it seems to a pointer to the Visual Interdev Navigation bar function, odd I didn't think I'd installed that.</td><td><font color=red>_vti_pvt/bots.btr</font color=red></td><td>Here is a sample of the kind of information to be found in this file:
vti_encoding:SR|utf8-nl
vinavbar:VW|C:Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedWeb Server Extensions40botsvinavbarvinavbar.inf vinavbar E I info N C:Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedWeb Server Extensions40botsvinavbarfp4Avnb.dll
Again, a pointer to the Visual Interdev Navigation bar dll.</td><td><font color=red>_vti_pvt/linkinfo.btr</font color=red></td><td>It appears to have a list of pages containing links and external links. Used for a report view perhaps?</td><td><font color=red>_vti_pvt/linkinfo.cnf</font color=red></td><td>Again, it appears to have a list of pages containing links and external links although it certainly doesn't seem to contain all of them. </td><td>_vti_txt/Default.wti/All.*</td><td>FP keeps text indexes for each web in a subdirectory named _vti_txt under the top level directory. Keeping a text index adds a small amount of overhead to saving a page and to recalculating hyperlinks. If you do not want to keep any text indexes and do not plan on using any search WebBots, then you can delete this directory and it will not be automatically recreated (no there is no info on how to create this folder after deletion <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>). This file is the index for each text and HTML page in the web except for this within directories that begin with an _.</td>
