Font size changes as user is typing (2000/?)

I have never experienced this occurrence, yet I have had several people describe it to me. I heard it again today and thought I'd find out if anyone here has experienced it or heard of it. The person today is using 2000, but I don't know the service release; I don't know what version/service release the others are using.

Here's their unanimous description: "I'm typing along and glance up to see that the font has changed to a smaller size." They insist that it happens while they are typing continuously, and that they are not moving through the text with the arrow keys or mouse, then returning to their typing. They also insist that this happens in a brand new document with no other text in it. Of course, this doesn't happen all the time, so it's going to be almost impossible for them to show me.

My thought was that while in the process of typing, they may have moved back to correct an error or unknowingly moved the insertion point away and then back to what appeared to be the same location but which was actually "outside" of text which they had previously formatted with the larger font. They insist they have not done this.

I'm anxious to hear your responses.

    Diane

I wonder if this user typed Ctrl+[ by mistake. Maybe meant to type Shift+[??

Excellent thought! They could have meant to type any of the characters near the [ using the Shift key, and pressed Ctrl instead ... missing it all the way around! I'll suggest they check their document for this the next time it occurs.

    Thanks, Kevin!

I have those once in a while -- excellent thoughts. Happy to share them.

    Diane:

Similarly, CTRL+SHIFT+< and CTRL+SHIFT+> will change point size as well.

That's right, Tony! I had forgotten about them. I'll add them to my list of suggestions.

    Thanks!

I've also noticed this happening if typing a simple document and therefore not opening Styles (with due respect to those who believe one should ALWAYS open Styles). One might Indent or dot-point and those Styles are in a smaller font in normal.dot.

Are you saying that if you simply indent or dot-point, the text that follows will change to a smaller font? I'm not familiar with the term dot-point. What is it?

    Hi Diane:
And one more. Ctrl+Shift+P will place the cursor in the FontSize box (runs the command FontSizeSelect). If you then type a number & <enter>, you've changed the size. It's much less likely than Ctrl+][><, however. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Another keyboard command that hasn't scored a mention yet is known as Shrink Selection and is called by Shift-F8

Could there be a setting in the "AutoFormat as you Type" area that could be doing this?

Another place to look is the "Shrink to Fit" command that can be run from the Print Preview screen and possibly can be called by a keystroke command from other than Print Preview.

Sorry for delay in replying - crazy day !! Dot-point - sorry should have said bullet. The font size doesn't always change but it will sometimes if you use it in a document without opening Styles.

Bullet ... got it! Thanks for the clarification, Tibbs.

Andrew, I looked through the AutoFormat options and couldn't find anything that seemed to me as if it would cause this effect. I had never heard of Shrink Selection, so I tried selecting text and pressing Shift+F8 ... the only result I could see was that the amount of text I had originally selected had been reduced (shrunk?) to selecting only the first word. I could see no font change. Is this how this is supposed to work?

Thanks, Phil for the additional keyboard shortcut that might have an effect.

Re: Font size changes as user is typing (2000/?)

    Hi Diane:
Pressing F8 repeatedly will select a word, sentence, paragraph, & the document. Shift F8 will collapse the selection in the reverse order. Ctrl+Shift+F8 sets up column select, where you can select a rectangular block of text. It should not affect font size (unless, of course, you operate a change on the selection).
    Cheers,
