Invalid doc name or path (Word 2000)

Greetings,

I have a doc which was never password protected. I renamed it without changing the type of doc, saved it, closed it. When I try to open it now I get this message

Microsoft Word
The document name or path is not valid. Try these suggestions.
*Check the file permissions for the document or dircve.
*Use the File Open dialog box to locate the document.

I went to File and the drop down provided the doc but when I clicked, same error message. I went to Start, Search and it brought me 3 copies of the doc. Each one gave same error message

I don't think Word is talking about a Word password: it would be much more specific about that. Word is having trouble getting the file from Windows.

Does the file name or path name contain spaces? Can you open other documents whose file/path names contain spaces?

If we rule out that problem, if you move the document to another folder, can you open it from there?

The name does have spaces - I renamed and removed spaces - still same message. All my docs and dots have spaces in the name - I tested several, they open fine.

I did move the .dot with the error message to a new folder and it still gave same message.

Here's something curious, when I do a START, SEARCH I find a dozen or more of that file listed with the end of the destination path saying "RECENT" - I've never seen this before.

There are 2 things I would try. The first is to delete temp files--see the first step in <post#=197827>post 197827</post#>. If that doesn't do it, do you have any problems opening other documents with the .doc extension? By the way, when you renamed it, did you do this within Word or within Windows Explorer? If the latter, make sure that you added the .doc extension.

I just read both of your posts. You first said you renamed a .doc. Then you said you move a .dot (template). They are entirely different. And if you have a dozen or more, are they read-only?

You might have to follow all the steps in <post#=197827>post 197827</post#>. In addition, I'd run an up-to-date virus scanner.
