Mark read problem

Every time I visit the lounge, no matter which forum I check, when I mark it read, the Word forum is marked read, too. I know one solution would be to just read the Word forum first, as it is one of my more important interests, but there's always lots of messages, and I like to read the smaller ones first. More a point of info than anything else, but I would love to know why this happens. Yes, I do use the navigation keys provided in the forum, not the Back and Forward buttons in Netscape 4.75.

I haven't been able to trace the cause and very nearly removed the button because of it but people said they'd rather keep it bugs 'n all than do without altogether.

    Re: Mark read problem

I just ran a quick test, marked "General Office Solutions" as read, but nothing else in the forum was marked as read as a result of the test. Now that I think about it a little, I have never had any problems with the mark as read button. I'm using NS 4.75 running under Win98SE. Could it possibly be an OS thing rather than a bug in the forum? Or even one of the NS settings? My

You may well be right. It doesn't happen to me either on IE5.5.

    Re: Mark read problem

I have IE 5.0 at home, and 5.5 here.

I have noticed, as have some others, that when I caome into work, many posts which I have read at home are marked as not read when I come into work- but not the other way around.

BUT, if I mark one forum as read, it can clear away the just the bogus non-read marks against posts in some other forums.

But I also suspect (and it's a bit difficult to test in the limited time I can be on the forum at work) that in some forums all flags are cleared, bogus or not.

Does that explain why the flags on my laptop get munged between my work network and dialling up (through the work network) from home?

    Re: Mark read problem

Are you using the same machine both at home and at work, dialing in to your workplace and using the same browser to access the Internet via the connection at your office?

Are you using a thin client for both connections?

If the answer to both is yes, then the answer *should* be no.

On the other hand, if you log in at work with a thick-client and then connect via the thin-client or something like PCAnywhere, then this would be the reason.

Actually the more I type the more complicated this gets.

Can you advise how you connect at work and how your dail-in connection works? There are all sorts of permutations, now I stop and think! Sorry about rambling!

    Re: Mark read problem

Well, I just did my own little experiment, I looked at the Word forum, there were 32 messages there....came right here, read the Lounge Matters forum, marked it read, went back to the main list and....all the Word messages are now marked read, too. No other forums are affected. I am using Netscape 4.75, and I haven't been reading anything here with another browser for several weeks (don't have time on my new job). So, same machine, same Netscape, same 'mark read' problem. I really don't want to use IE just to read here, what I'll do from now on is read Word first and just let it be

    Re: Mark read problem

I'm currently using my laptop to access the lounge from work and home. I run w2k pro /office97 (although I'm actually trying to get IS to wipe this and put 95 back.)I have both netscape and IE on the machine but only ever use IE to access the lounge (version 5.50.4134.0600). At work I just slap the machine in the docking station and run through Novell login (for windows NT/2000) to access the network. At home I boot up the same way but checking the local workstation only box. I then dial up to work, log on to the network automatically - except for certain servers - and then fire up IE.

Sometimes the read flags remember everything perfectly, sometimes they forget the last session, other times it's just one or two that are still marked unread. I live with it - it's not a huge problem, but it does seem a little odd.

Oh, a one line description of the differences between thick and thin clients wouldn't go amiss - I know the terminology but if I'm honest I couldn't explain it to anyone.

    Re: Mark read problem

I think that you may be "Mis-reading" what the numbers mean 134 (11) the blue number indicates the total number of posts to this forum - the red number indicates the number of posts made to the forum since the last time you looked at that forum. Once inside the forum, are there still litle red spots on the folders? If so, these are the unread posts.

    Re: Mark read problem

No, I am not misreading anything. I know what the red numbers mean, that there are new posts since the last time I signed on, and no, once the other folder (not the Word folder) is marked read, there are no unread messages in the Word folder. Eileen has confirmed that this is a problem, I really am not imagining it
