Normal Dot corrupts on Save (Word XP w/ windows 2000)

For some reason, every time I say add a new autoformat or autocorrect, and then allow a save change to normal.dot, this causes a corruption of normal dot and forces a reload of word in safe mode. I have upgraded word xp to sp2. Otherwise everything is fine.
I would create a new normal.dot by renaming the old one and restarting word, but 2 issues with this1. I can't copy projects over and 2. autocorrect is not an option to copy.Anything weird with SP2??

Regarding the AutoCorrect, unless you are saving it as a formatted entry, it is saved in a separate file with a .ACL extension. This doesn't help you with Normal.dot, but at least you shouldn't be losing your unformatted AutoCorrect entries.

    Hi,
I'm having a similar problem, tho not identical. In my case it happens whenever I customize within a template, e.g. change a hotkey assignment. Have you gotten anywhere with your problem?

Re: Normal Dot corrupts on Save (Word XP w/ windows 2000)

The only way I got it to work was to buy a new computer with xp reinstall the software, upgrade to sp1, sp2 and copy over my normal dot which then worked fine.
You may try to create a new windows person / account and load word and see if that helps or uninstall or reinstall your software or buy a new computer as I did. I understand microsoft at level 2 has ways of totally deleting word registry so that it never ever existed.
    GOod luck

    Hi David:
What problem are you having exactly? If Windows is crashing & you must reboot in safe mode, the there may be OS issues, rather than Word. With Word, I'd try doing a repair or following the steps in <post#=197827>post 197827</post#>.
    Cheers,

Re: Normal Dot corrupts on Save (Word XP w/ windows 2000)

Thanks to jrklein--I actually am using WinXP already (with Word 2002), and I'm hoping to fix this with something short of buying a new computer!
Thank you, Phil. Nothing is crashing, per se. What happens, after I change aspects of normal.dot (my test case is assigning a hotkey to the normal style), is that after closing Word then reopening it, it comes up in safe mode and I have to restore the pre-change version of the template (which I keep a copy of) to get Word to start normally. If that rings any new bells, I'd be grateful to hear their ringing. Otherwise I will try the steps in your superb and generous "Systematic Approach." (BTW, the tip you give about how to back up one's settings is pure gold--I've been holding off on trying a few things just because I didn't want to lose settings. Now I feel bolder!)
    Cheers,
    David

Re: Normal Dot corrupts on Save (Word XP w/ windows 2000)

    Hi David:
You're quite welcome for the tips. I'm not sure what you mean that Word is coming up in Safe Mode. The only Safe Mode I'm aware of is when the OS has trouble booting & it boots without any drivers & with 640x480 resolution (to mess up your icons <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>). Then you see "Safe Mode" in each of the 4 corners of the screen. Maybe Word 2002 is different (& I haven't tried it yet). But you might have a corrupt normal.dot or an add-in that's affecting Word. Hopefully, the steps in <post#=197827>post 197827</post#> will help.

Re: Normal Dot corrupts on Save (Word XP w/ windows 2000)

Yeah, I think the Word safe mode is brand new with Word 2002. It pops up when Word would otherwise have crashed, failed to open properly, etc., and performs some sort of repairs of files that caused the crash. I've also thought of corrupt template or add-in, but I've tried a lot of things to address those possible causes without results. The weird thing is that the template is absolutely fine until I modify something in it, then, bang, it's bad again. I've been using the same old backup of an original normal.dot to restore it over and over. Maybe there's something bad in there that only gets triggered by a modification, but that seems highly unlikely. Then again, who knows at this point. I'm going to try some more things, including your tips, and I'll post the results. Cheers, David

Why don't you try renaming normal.dot & letting Word rebuild an entirely new one. Don't keep using the same backup if you keep getting the same problem.
    Good luck!
