    Recycle bin has disappeared

Recycle Bin no longer appears on any drive, it used to be there, one for C and one for D. I have the Norton's Protected Recycle Bin but when I open it Unerase appears. I want my Windows Recycle Bin back.I found an article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base #246726 titled Cannot Delet Any Files in Windows and followed each step faithfully and restarted the computer. Nothing had changed. I also removed Norton's protection, rebooted, still no Recycle Bin.

What should I do to reinstall it?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Will someone kindly tell me how to reinstall plain recycle bin

When you open Windows Explorer do you see it down at the bottom? If so put your curser on it and drag it to the desktop.

    Or you can do this.

modify this registry entry and everything will be back as it was:

    Hive: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
    Key: SoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersion
    ExplorerDesktopNameSpace

    add the following key:

    Key: {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA 002F954E}
    Value Name:
    Data Type: REG_SZ
    Value: Recycle Bin

Press F5 to refresh the key, and there

    Re: Recycle bin has disappeared

If you don't understand the one above try this one. Go to Start, Run, Type REGEDIT and click OK. Locate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE Hive {Double-Click on the SOFTWARE Key} {Double-Click on the Microsoft Key} {Double-Click on the Windows Key} {Double-Click on the CurrentVersion Key} {Double-Click on the explorer Key} {Double-Click on the Desktop Key} {Double-Click on the NameSpace Key} Add a new key here and call it {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F9543} Be sure to include the curly brackets and dashes. Also note that this represents a hexidecimal value and thus all o's are zero's This newly created key will automatically add a String Value called Default with a value of "Data not set" Double-Click on the String and change the Value data to Recycle Bin

No, it's no where to be found. Not on my hard drive, not in Windows Explorer. If I had found it anywhere I would have dragged it to my desktop or used Send To to put it where it belongs. That's why I posted my problem here, I've searched everywhere and it's gone and flown the coop. I must have left the door unlocked (smile).

    Re: Recycle bin has disappeared

I'm wide open for any and all suggestions, and I certainly will try the registry fix. There's just one small problem, I can't refresh because I have an Office Keyboard and there is no F5 key. Can I REFRESH any other way?

I'll return here to post the results of the regisry fix. Cross your fingers, I'm typing with mine crossed, difficult but not impossible.

I think I understand both instructions. If I have difficulty doing the registry thing, I'll return and post exactly what I did and the results.

I really appreciate your intrest Cowboy, I hesitate to call you a dawg, but that's my hang up. So if you have no objections I'll address you as plain Cowboy, OK?

Thats cool. It really is supposed to be just Cowboy but someone already had that name here on the Lounge, although I have never seen him or the name.

I'm glad you approve of the name change. Perhaps the original Cowboy when home to the range. (Corny I know but I just couldn't resist).

Remember that the recycle bin is a system file and is hidden by default. Did you trun on "Show System files"?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Re: Recycle bin has disappeared

Dave I've been running Windows since the 95 version and have always had Show All Files selected the entire time. I leave it that way because I have sense enough not to try and change, delete or any thing else to System Files.
Now that you mention what kind of file it is, I wonder if I could go to SFC and get a new copy, do you think that is an option?

Thanks for the reminder though, I could have forgotten to do that.

    Re: Recycle bin has disappeared

    >>I have the Norton's Protected Recycle Bin but when I open it Unerase appears. I want my Windows Recycle Bin back.

Just a side note. "Nortons's Protected Recycle Bin" is just the regular old "Recycle Bin" with a new name and an altered functionality. You cannot have both at the same time for they are one in the same thing.

    >>I also removed Norton's protection...

What does this mean? Did you "uninstall" Norton Utilities? Did you delete the "Norton's Protected Recycle Bin" from your Desktop -- or your HardDrive?

I would suspect Windows would whine a little bit if you tried to truly delete the Recycle Bin from your Computer. It must be considered an important System folder.

Look into your Registry and find out what the "(Default)" value is for this key:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCLSID{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}
    __________

If you want to see WHY "Norton Unerase" opens when to double-click 'their' bin, check out the sub-key here:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCLSID{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}Shell

...and notice to where the "Command" keys points.

    Re: Recycle bin has disappeared

I realize that Norton's inserted itself over the Windows Recycle Bin.
No, I did not uninstall Norton Utilites until this morning as a last ditch effort to get the Recycle Bin to show Properties and Empty All Files. I can't apply any fix that I found because they all said Properties had to be selected to make any changes. I read a knowledge base article that said to delete C:Recycled, I tried but Access was denied.

Never would I even try to remove the Recycle Bin. What reason would anyone have for doing such a stupid thing. Perhaps if it become corrupted, I would but that would be the only reason.

When I checked the Registry, and double clicked on default, the Edit String window opened. This is what I read: Value Name: (Default) Value Data (Norton Protectd) Recycle Bin.
Should I change it to read (Windows)Recycle Bin?

I definitely wanted to see the reason WHY "Norton Unerase" opens. I found the Registry Entry. In the right hand pane was just the word Default > edit string > Value name > Default. Value data - Norton Protected Recycle Bin.

If I removed NRB from every instance where it appears and typed Windows Recycle Bin, would that do the trick?

I clicked the plus sign on Shell, then the one next to UnErase Wizard and there was one word - Command.

    Re: Recycle bin has disappeared

No I don't think that would do anything except possibly change the name. But it won't have anything to do with changing the way it works.

    Re: Recycle bin has disappeared

OK, so you HAVE a Recycle Bin -- it has NOT 'disappeared' and this statement is not really correct:

"Recycle Bin no longer appears on any drive."

You have it but it is just not the Recycle Bin you want. Norton has taken over your Recycle Bin and you want Windows to reclaim it. That is completely different from having no Recycle Bin.

Just modifying the name will not do it. You need to try to UN-install Norton Utilities (or whatever you used to give you the 'Norton Protection'). Yes, it is probably possible to edit the registry and unistall this, but why not use the uninstalller that came with Norton?
