    Flexible Find utility (97 2000 2002)

    Hi all,

I just finished a new version of my flexfind utility (attached).

    - modernised the interface by using a userform.
    - added match case and entire cell option

    ### EDITED: fixed a small bug regarding an automation error when restarting the utility after closing it using the close "X" of the form.
    ### EDITED AGAIN, Fixed bug in more elegant way.

    Re: Flexible Find utility (97 2000 2002)

Jan, (I created a new thread, but should have replied to your post where I downloaded the flexfind program, my apologies). Here is my problem:

I am not able to run flexfind402. I get "Compile error: Variable not defined". This program will run on another machine with the same version of excel ('97 SR-2), so I think the problem is unique to my installation. I have tried reinstalling excel. I am running windows 98 SE ver 4.10.222 A.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

When you get this error, can you see in the Visual Basic Editor what the name of the undefined variable is?

Could you open the VBE with flexfind opened and check Tools, references. Note any that are indicated as MISSING.

If none are missing, please post the statement highlighted at the compile error.

    Yes, it is "vbModeless".

    Re: Flexible Find utility (97 2000 2002)

    Jan,
There were numerous references with checkboxes unchecked, but non that were listed as missing. I noticed that "Visual Basic for Applications" was listed 6 times, but unchecked. When I trie to check any of these, I get an error "Name Conflicts With Existing Module, Project, or Object Library".

The line that is highlighted at the compile error is: frmFlexifind.Show vbModeless.

    Thanks again for your time,
    Dan Arbaney

Try commenting out that line by putting an apostrophe ' at the beginning of the line. It is only needed for Excel 2000 and higher, vbModeless doesn't exist in Excel 97.

    Jan,
Thanks for your help, and for a great utility! I commented out the "vba modeless" line as suggested by Hans (see my other post to Hans today) and all is well.
BTW I have been using your previous version of flexfind for some time now, it has saved me a lot of time. Both programs are truly gems.

    Re: Flexible Find utility (97 2000 2002)

Hmm. This is strange indeed. The vbmodeless constant should not be needed when you are using XL97 and you should get NO compile error when running flexfind normally. It should detect your Excel version and act accordingly.

It does not give any compile errors on my XL97, UNLESS I choose debug, compile. But the compile error that is then reported (the one you get) can be safely ignored.

Exactly what XL version does Help, About of Excel report to you?

    Jan,
Help About reports Excel 97 SR-2. I also went into visual basic Help/About/System Info, and under the applications category, "EXCEL 2000", it reports Version 8.0e build 5618. My coworker's computer reports exactly the same versions, but flexfind runs without errors on his machine.

Sounds like this is going to remain a mystery then. Oh well,....

No problem, I'm happy since commenting out the line works.

    Thanks again,
