    Win 98 Product key

I have lost my product key to my computer that has windows 98 installed on it. Can you tell me how I can go into the Windows registery and find the product key so I can reinstall Windows 98 on the same computer...it now hangs up and is corrupted. Thank you in advance for the assistance in bailing me out of a jam. John

It hangs up while multi-tasking also sometimes when we shut the computer down for the night. I want to do a clean install and start from scratch.

I'm assuming that you aren't doing anything illegal <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15> ; so here is how you do it. Click the Start button--Run--type in regedit and click OK. Then back up your registry. Then go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINEsoftwareMicrosoft--double click the Microsoft folder. Now scroll down to Windows and double click that folder. Then double click on the Current Version folder and look for the entry Product key or Productid in the right window pane. If you find it you've found your code <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>

    Not really. <img src=/S/doh.gif border=0 alt=doh width=15 height=15> . But it has become such good advice, it is second nature to repeat it. <img src=/S/devil.gif border=0 alt=devil width=15 height=15>

    Re: Win 98 Product key

    Hi John:
If you're reinstalling Windows with the CD, pursuant to Jay's advice, look for ProductID. The CD key number you need to install Windows 95 is made up of the second and third group. I assume that's the same for Win98.
    Cheers,

    Re: Win 98 Product key

Hi Phil, I dont need to reinstall 98, but after reading this thread I had a look at my disc, and it only has a "part" number on it, no key code on the back. I had a look in my Control Panel under System, and it brought up the General screen which lists my name and number as the registered user, is that the Product key for my 98 CD?

    Re: Win 98 Product key

No, that's not the Product ID number. If you look in the registry where Jay pointed, you'll find that the code is a 25-digit sequence of 5 character groups separated by hyphens. I can't remember what that number is that appears on the System Properties screen, but it sure isn't used for installing the product. Then, there's also some products that have a much shorter CD Key on the little cardboard sleeve. In the case of the OS, that's not what we're talking about here either. I've made it a habit for several years of keeping a Sharpie pen handy for writing the number needed for installation on the label-surface of the CD of ANY product I install. In cases where there's than more than one number, I write 'em on the CD, just in case one is needed in order to get support or whatever.

<img src=/S/thankyou.gif border=0 alt=thankyou width=40 height=15> Thanks Al, good idea to write the code on the CD, I'll have to do just that. Appreciate you getting back as I really thought I knew my platform key code, that will teach me to double check these things. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>
