Crock pot needed

Being from I grew up on and still enjoy a good mess of pinto beans with ham hocks, fresh cornbread and scallions. Every now and then, however, for too many times in my 68 years, I bought a can of Boston baked beans and a companion can of brown bread. To add to this infamous calumny, I would sometimes add weinies to the mix and pretend to be dining properly.

Lately my sins have started bothering me and I'm making amends -- and they aren't all culinary, by the way. Anyway, I'm going to alternate my red beans with genuine Boston Baked Beans and homemade brown bread. I've got several good receipies including my wife's dog-eared Fanny Farmer's Cookbook and friends who made their way from Massachusetts to Hawai`i with fond memories of how this should be done. In other words, we're going to have a good time at this.

The only problem is nobody in Hawai`i seems to know what a proper crock pot is. Okay, the department stores have those electric do-hickeys with a thin pot stuffed into an ugly metal shell but no matter who tells me otherwise I know that isn't going to work.

So here's the question. Do you know of a place for a proper crock pot by mail order? Online makes sense if you know. I've been to google and I'll look some more but you may know one by personal experience that is just right.

If so, please post it here with any recipes that are particularly dear to your family in this regard. Seems to be a storm brewing over whether salt pork or smoked bacon is better as a flavoring agent. And which molasses is best?

    Aloha,

Thank you very much for the Wayside link. My wife and I spent some good time in there.

You may also appreciate Vermont Country Store which has the same quality but, perhaps, an even larger selection of goods. Their Crock Pot offerings, however, are skimpy compared to Wayside!

One of the few complaints I have about living in Hawai`i is that it would require about $20 shipping to get a proper pot over here. That's inspiration to find one already on island!

    Again, mahalo for your note,

I wanted to order a small 'add-on' for my iPod from a US site. It cost $38 but they wanted $58 for shipping. Weight was 120gm (0.26lbs). Fergedaboudit!

This is another one of the new horrors of business in America. They don't like to use the U. S. Mail! So if you can find a friend who knows and can get what you want he can probably mail it to you for about $5 bucks. Those of us in Hawai`i do this all the time so I'm not just popping it off the top of my noggin. Of course, I have no idea what the postage to Switzerland could be but your friendly post office could tell you in a quick jiffy.

    Aloha Bill,

I must admit, having checked your time zone and mine, that to have posted a thread about "a crock" on April 1, your time, appeared suspicious .

I hope you enjoy your crock when you receive it!

    Cheers from Down Under.

You can check it out at this site . To Switzerland a package of 5ozs would cost from $3.80 surface mail (4-6 weeks) to $23 Global Express (3-5 days). A few options in between. I probably would have paid up to $20, had it been available.

Another problem using courier services is that the vendors don't like to ship to addresses other than the credit card billing address. But if you arn't home all day every day it can be a hassle to get it. Usually we end up having it delivered to my office (which is about 250 metres from the courier companies offices at Geneva airport) after playing telephone tag for a couple of days. One courier company won't deliver at all to my village because we don't have street names or numbers (it's too small). Saying that 'big house on the corner' isn't good enough for them.

Bring on the post office, I say. It's cheap (ok - reasonable) and it either gets stuck in your mailbox, or you get a note telling you to come to the post office to pick it up.

    Bill:

Have spent much happy time with Vermont Country Store. Another source I expect you might enjoy is http://www.lehmans.com , a Pennsylvania Dutch company specializing in "non-electric" stuff.

    Happy browsing ...

    Geoff,

No, the post wasn't a 'crock.' But you are right, it very well might have been! Meanwhile my seach has taken me to MOAC (The Mother of all Crocks!) Crock maker You just never know where the net will be thrown.

    Dick,

Lehman's is a wonderful find. They don't seem to have a crockpot for beans, however, but their offerings enriched my search to MOAC (The Mother of all Crocks!) Crock maker in Ohio. May be the best deal yet. You just never know where the net will be thrown.

    Bowlie,

You should try the 'surface' mail on a small package you don't care about. The fact is there is virtually no 'surface' mail in or from America, particularly small packets. It costs the post office more to just handle the truck/ship/truck/truck/truck than to use air/truck in today's transporation networks. That little burg you live in may not count, however. Could you folks just give one house an address -- even if it makes no sense to your town -- so you could make the shippers relax? Pay the dude a guilder for letting you know your package arrived.

    Ed,

First he dumps a half cup of catsup into four cans of beans and then gives us a lecture on food safety..

That's very appropriate in Hawai`i, for sure!

Thank you for thinking of us out here in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.
