Prompts for Password (IE 6/Windows 98)

On a couple of our Windows 98 computers running IE 6 (with all the latest patches installed), we have an intermittent problem where as a user goes to click on a link on our Intranet it prompts them for a username and password. Of course, anything they enter it doesn't accept. It appears to only do this when they are attempting to click a link that opens a MS Word and/or PDF file. We have verified their connection settings, security zone for the Intranet vs Internet, etc. but to no avail.

What could be causing this and how can we eliminate the prompting of this username/password? Any feedback is appreciated.

Have you checked the following setting?
    Tools/Internet Options
    Security Tab
Click on the Custom Level button
Scroll all the way to the bottom where it says "User Authentication" and "Logon"
Make sure "Prompt for Username and Password" is NOT selected.
There are three other choices here that you may want to try each one to see how they work in this instance.

If they right-click and choose Save Target As... are they prompted for a password in that scenario?

Check the last section in Tools | Internet Options | Security | Local intranet | Custom Level. Look for "User Authenication | Logon".
