There is no default (built-in) shortcut key for Insert/Cross-reference.

If you like, you can assign one yourself: select Tools/Customize..., then click the Keyboard... button. If you want the shortcut to work in every document, specify modifications to be stored in Normal.dot; if you want the shortcut to be available in one document, or in documents based on a specific template, select that document or template.
Select Insert from the list of Categories, then InsertCrossReference from the list of commands.
Click in the "Press new shortcut box", then press the desired shortcut. If it is already in use, you'll see the command it is currently used for. If you want a different shortcut, clear the box and try anew. Finally, click Assign. Your new shortcut will overrule old ones if they existed; this way. There are probably built-in shortcuts for commands you never use, so you won't shoot yourself in the foot if you assign a new action.

You could just type Alt,i,r (that's Alt followed by i followed by r). There are numerous letters in menus which are "hot" & you activate menus by pressing Alt & then a letter (e.g. Alt,i activates the Insert menu).

Phil,

In Word 2002 (Office XP) Cross-reference (along with Footnote, Caption, and Index and Tables) has been moved from the main Insert menu to a Reference side menu. This does not invalidate your advice, of course, but it does add an extra keystroke to the sequence, which is Alt,i,n,r (i.e. Alt followed by i followed by n followed by r): the 'accelerator' letter for the Reference side menu is n.

Best wishes,

Thanks, Robin. You know, every version of Word makes it more & more difficult to do the same tasks. I'm still upset that they added a "More" button to the Find/Replace dialog box after Word 95 & that they hid the "Cell Height & Width..." command for tables.
