    Command Prompt Reference (Win XP)

If this one is old hat to some of you, I'm sorry, but I had never seen this one before. In the current issue of Scot Finnie's Newsletter, he describes a help function for the Windows XP Command Prompt. There is however, what I believe to be a typo in the command he says to use. On my system I had to change his %windir% to read %systemroot% and it brings up some help as in the attachment.

thanks Al. I created a desktop shortcut, called it Command Line Help, and I'll study up when I have some spare moments. Funny, but the more I get into XP (and now Win2003 .Net), the more I seem to be using the command line!!!

Umm....did you try Start > Help and search for 'command-line'?

That would be to simple for a programmer to do.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Hi, Al ~

This is a nice help module. I wonder why this is buried & how it is normally accessed?

Contrary to what Mr. Finnie published, you do not need to open up the command line to activate this help module, but rather save yourself a step and paste the <pre>%windir%hh.exe ms-its:c:WindowsHelpntcmds.chm::/ntcmds.htm</pre>

    string directly into 'Run'.

Umm...'Help and search'? No. 'Help and Support', yes. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15> Apparently I framed the query too loosely. 'Help and Support' is NOT how one normally accesses the entire stand-alone '.chm' module.

This is good info, and if you just put "command line" or "command line reference" in the Search box to "Help and Support," you will get this and a number of other command line aids and tips. Also putting "commands" in that search box brings up still more command line information (45 results) and 15 KB's--including Command Shell Overview.
