    Work menu (Word 2000/2002)

It appears that the Work menu will hold only five items. I can get more than five but once I close the document, close Word and then start it again, only five remain. I notice that the Work menu can be saved to Normal or to Document 1. I've been saving it in Normal. Is this a mistake? To clarify, if I add the document to the Work menu and then close the document, it will remain in the Work menu. However, once I close Word and open it up again, that is when I have only five in the Work menu. I have noticed this on two computers. What is it that I am not realizing?
    Thank you very much.

    Go to
    Tools
    Customize
    Click on Commands tab
Select Built-In Menus in Categories section
In Commands section, highlight Work and drag it to toolbar
    Click close

The Work menu allows one to access often-used files.

    Thank you.

I haven't seen that limit mentioned anywhere. For example, this tip says "Any number of documents can be added to the Work menu..." (Top 12 Word Tips). According to Charles Kenyon's FAQ, "Like the 'Recent Files' under the File menu, the Work Menu has a limit of nine documents. When you attempt to add a tenth document, it will bump the document currently at the bottom of the Work Menu." (See Work Menu in Microsoft Word).

Could these limits be tied directly together? Do the computers you tested list only five items in the recently used list on the File menu?

Thank you for responding so quickly. This is frustrating! The computers that I use list 9 items in the Recently used list of the File menu. Still, the Work menu remains at 5 documents if I close and then open Word.
    Thank you again.

Is the Normal template locked? Can you delete one of the entries in the menu and then add another and get the new one to stick?

Thank you. We may be getting somewhere. I eliminated 1 of the 5. I added a new document to the Work menu. I then closed Word. When I re-opened it, I was left with the original 5! Therefore, please explain how the Normal template is locked and how I can unlock it.
    Thank you very much.

    Re: Work menu (Word 2000/2002)

I just did something that seems to have solved my problem. However, I am not sure why it solved the problem!
    I did the following:
    Tools
    Options
    General
Change Recently used file list to 0 entries
    OK
Repeat above procedure and change Recently used file list to 9 entries.

Now, when I close and open Word, both lists function properly.
    What did I do?
    Thank you, everyone.

    Re: Work menu (Word 2000/2002)

My guess would be that the list of items in the Work menu had become corrupted somehow. Setting the number of Recently used files to 0 clears out both the list of Recently used files AND the Work menu. If you then set the number to 9, both lists will be built anew.

    Hi Alan:
This has happened to me more than once; however, I was limited to 7 or 8. Your DATA key in the registry is corrupt. Take a look at the last step in <post#=197827>post 197827</post#>.
    Cheers,
