    Parser message (WIn XPH SP!)

I just discovered a problem that I wasn't aware of, since I hadn't used this for a while.

When I try to go to addremove programs in control panel, click on the icon, I get a message titled "Parser Message". Within the box it says, "value creation failed at line 472", with just an OK box to get out of it. I have never run into this before so I'm not sure how to attack the problem, since it appears to be a corrupt file SOMEWHERE in the system.
I ran SFC /scannow,& chkdsk /f and it didn't pick up anything that I was aware of and the problem persists. SO, before I go off the deep end, I thought I would see if anyone could point me in the right direction to solve this.??? <img src=/S/groan.gif border=0 alt=groan width=16 height=15>

Neither Osborne nor Microsoft's big fat books on XP have anything in index about "parser message." And, as I'm sure you aready found, it isn't in the online XP help. Three down and a library to go! Did you try MS Knowledge Base? <img src=/S/bash.gif border=0 alt=bash width=35 height=39>

    Hi Bill,
Yes I tried MSKB without much luck. Sent me all over the place without making much sense. I just ran GoBAck to the start of the day today and it's still the same, so it's nothing I did today. Maybe will go back another day just for kicks.

Not sure what you mean by GoBack. I do suggest XP's System Restore but more than just this morning. That is a very strange message you're getting. How's your virus checker behaving?

    Try this post at techangel:
<hr>Fixing the dreaded "Parser Message: Value creation failed " at line 472" error. This is a problem with the file shellstyle.dll, which is included in most visual styles. Use the following steps to fix the problem: 1.) Go to your /WINDOWS/Resources/Themes directory, or wherever you may have your themes located.
2.) Go into the directory of the theme your currently using.
Example: Using 'Semplice' by KoL? Navigate to /WINDOWS/Resources/Themes/Semplice
3.) Go into the folder called 'Shell" within the previous directory.
4.) Inside you'll find a folder with a file called 'shellstyle.dll' inside. Now remember the name of the theme your using? (Example: Semplice). You need to rename this folder from Shell to the name of the theme your currently using. If you don't know the exact name, go to Display Properties, and try to Display/Show the theme, the name you see in Display Properties is the name you need to change the 'Shell' folder to.
Example: Using Semplice as an example, the Shell folder for that theme is called 'Shell', in this situation you'll need to rename the folder to 'Semplice'. Easy enough, right?
Note that for multi-part themes, aka themes with more than one variation or color, you'll need to rename each corresponding 'Shell' folder to what is displayed in Display Properties when you try to apply the theme.
5.) Now that you've changed the 'Shell' folder name to correspond with the visual styles name, reapply the theme.
    6.) Go to Add/Remove Programs, and voila!<hr>

    Hi Leif,
Great job ! That was the fix for that strange problem. A little involved to do it but it seemed to work out fine. Took a while to get back to you 'cause I also lost my DSL connection for a while. Was able to get that going again OK, but it was a little too much happening all at once. At any rate I'll keep my eyes on the rest of my apps and hopefully I came out of it all right.
I'm going to print out that fix to put in my files for future reference.
    Thanks again. <img src=/S/bravo.gif border=0 alt=bravo width=16 height=30>

    Hi Bill,
Well I'm back in business again. See Leif's post with the fix that worked.

BTW, GoBack is a more robust version to use in place of System Restore. Do a search on it in the lounge and you will come up with a ton of posts.
Also, I always keep my AV up to date. I did run it to make sure no strangers sneaked in the back door.
