I have Windows XP SP-1 on my PC at home. Do I need to download Direct X 9.0a Runtime from MIcrosoft. What does Direct X do and what version came with Windows XP.

Directx is basically a graphics and video enhancer. XP comes with Ver 8.0 or 8.1, and the decision to upgrade is yours (it is not required). I have upgraded to 9.0 and have mixed feelings as to the real need for ME. Be aware that once you install 9.0, you cannot UN-install it unless you use system restore or another prog like GoBack to revert to another time frame.
    For more detailed info on Directx go to http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/p...iew/default.asp <img src=/S/scratch.gif border=0 alt=scratch width=25 height=29>

I did and I use WinXP. I haven't had any problems with it and I play alot of Games on my system. JUST make sure you don't download the BETA version. And I think WinXP came with Direct X 8.0 . Make sure you have a good restore point like Viking said, just in case.

DirectX is a Windows technology which enables higher performance in graphics and sound when you are playing games, watching videos or using some graphics software packages. I believe XP comes with DirectX 8.1.

To find out what version you have:<UL><LI>'Start' > 'Run' > enter dxdiag[/list]Typically, any program that uses DirectX will install the version of DirectX it requires in order to run. Therefore, you generally should not need to download DirectX 9.0 in order to get your programs to run. That said, it does not hurt to install DirectX 9.0. Some of the new functionality built into DirectX 9.0 may even enhance the quality and performance of your existing programs that utilize DirectX technology. Additionally, many game demos do not come with DirectX, so you may need to install DirectX 9.0 if you plan to play the latest demos.

You can get it here <IMG SRC=http://www.krymow.com/images/icon_pointr.gif> DirectX 9.0a Runtime.

For anyone that's interested, the redistributable is now available for download. It's a hefty 30MB or so, but if you install Windows often, it may be worth it:

For those that are interested, I have a tool named DirectX Buster that will remove the un-removeable Direct X program.

    www.directxbuster.de/index_e.html.

Maybe it will do some one a lot of good.

    Re: Direct X 9.0a

Thank you Ken for the new address. Belarc gives me a list of all hardware & programs on the computer. I wouldn't think of being without it.

    Two questions, if you please.
Is Belarc Advisisor compatible with Windows XP (full install )?

Where will I find the Windows Compatibility Hardware & Software List?

I tried to install XP and the installation bogged down on Hardware search. This was AFTER I had fdisked and formatted my hard drive. Leaving me high and dry and having to install Win 98 ME again plus all the programs I had previously.

    Poor Me!

I'm trying to get my nerve up to un-install Win 98 SE and install XP again, this time without doing the things I did previously. I'm going to try & install it over SE.

    Hi Duchess,

    Yes.
<hr>Where will I find the Windows Compatibility Hardware & Software List?<hr>
The Hardware Compatibility List is at http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/default.mspx. For software, you're best to check with the vendor - I don't know of any central listing that Microsoft maintains. Just about everything will run on XP though, and it includes a compatibility mode for other versions of Windows to assist in getting older programs to run.

    Re: Direct X 9.0a

    Thank you Mark:
I have so many programs that I'll just install the OS and if any programs can't be used, I'll uninstall it. I will use the link and see if there's good or bad news.

I've been re-installing shareware and free programs for the last 3 days and I'm so tired. Some vendors of shareware are so very slow responding with information on how to remove the time limits.

    Re: Direct X 9.0a

I can tell you one thing that's kind of nice - Windows 2000 does this also. When you upgrade from within Windows 98, the setup program will scan your system and report anything that doesn't work in XP - typically virus software, or devices it can't find drivers for. At that point you've got an opportunity to remove the program/device, or get an update, before continuing installation.

Good luck with it....we'll all be here if and when you have more questions!

Those are the best words I've read since I read my marraige license (smile). I was looking at the compatibility list and it must be a football field long.

Thank you, and I will return, you can take that to the bank.
