Linking to Word bookmarks (Word 2000)

Hi,

I know that I can simply link to a Word document from within a web page, and when the link is clicked on, Internet Explorer at least will open the document in Word (if it's installed on the PC of course). What I want to know is, if the document contains bookmarks, can I link to a specific bookmark from the web page so that the document opens and goes directly to that bookmark? I think the answer is probably "no", but I thought it was worth asking!

Thanks

Put #BookmarkName at the end of the URL. For example
http://server.somewhere.net/folder/D...t.doc#Chapter2

Wow -- that looked so simple! Unfortunately it doesn't work :-( The cursor just stays at the top of the document.

Thanks anyway ...

Interesting tip. It won't work from Mozilla 1.2, but it works from Internet Explorer. Mozilla will open the document but won't go to the bookmark.

It definitely works for me. I have just copied a word document with a bookmark to my personal web space and tested it from Internet Explorer 6.
What browser are you using?
Is your word document on a public web site where we can try it, or is it on an Intranet?

Hmmm .. curious. I've tried using both IE 5.5 and IE6. I've just uploaded a test page...

Re: Linking to Word bookmarks (Word 2000)

When I open your document from my web browser it jumps directly to the bookmark.

My browser reports itself as

Version: 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp1.020828-1920
Cipher Strength: 128-bit
Product ID: 55274-640-4659524-23136
Update Versions:; SP1; Q810847; Q813951;

This is running on Windows XP Professional SP 1.

It also does the same (correct) thing on a second PC running Windows 2000 Professional with

Version: 6.0.2800.1106
Cipher Strength: 128-bit
Product ID: 55736-271-8358803-04836
Update Versions:; SP1; Q324929;

Re: Linking to Word bookmarks (Word 2000)

:-( Oh well -- must be something about our setup. It's Windows 2000 Pro, same version of IE6 as you. Perhaps it's the version of Word that makes a difference? Mine's Word 2000, 9.0.3821, SR-1 (French version).

In any case, we clearly can't rely on this feature working in all circumstances! Thanks very much for taking the time to help.

Re: Linking to Word bookmarks (Word 2000)

For what it's worth, this is my experience on two different systems:

The doc opens at the top in IE 5 / Word 97 SR2 / Windows NT 4.
The doc opens at the bookmark in IE 6 / Word 2002 SP-2 / Windows XP Pro SP-1.

So I have to agree that you can't rely on the bookmark.
