    App Protection

    This question has intrigued me for some time, and I've never discovered the answer.

    Some .dot apps are protected with a password by checking the "Lock Project for Viewing" box and providing a password in the project properties. To open the app, you must first open the template in Word. When you then try to open the project, VBE prompts for a password.

    But some .dot apps I get from others will not allow viewing and will not prompt for a password even if the template is open. How is this accomplished? I'd like that extra measure of security for my app too.

    Also, can I "compile" a .dot app into a dll?

    This might not directly be an answer to your question, but it can answer how to create extra security- However, it's only available to Word 2000. It's creating a COM add-in which can be completely protected from prying eyes:
