Save as bitmap (2002 on Win XP)

When receiving HTML type email, with embedded images, all I can "Save as" is bitmap. I have NO problem in IE from any web page, just the images in the emails. This happens with ALL types.

    Any suggestions?

Here's a workaround that I find effective in Outlook 2000.
    1. <LI>Create a new folder named OE-Import near the top level of your main .PST folder.
<LI>Ctrl+Click and drag the message(s) into this folder (this should copy rather than move).
<LI>Open Outlook Express (I tested using version 5.5) and choose File > Import > Messages....
<LI>Select Microsoft Outlook and click Next.
<LI>Select the OE-Import folder and click Next.
<LI>Look for a new folder named OE-Import in your Outlook Express local folders. Your message(s) will be in there. The inline graphics will have been converted to attachments with the correct extensions and can be saved to disk in their original formats.
I'd be interested in a faster way if anyone knows of one.

    This has started happening to me recently too <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

I simply save as xxxxxxx.bmp, open with PhotoEditor and save in the format I want.
Much as suggested in 234943 - OL2000: Embedded Graphics in HTML Messages Must Be Saved as Bitmaps

    I wonder if it is either XP and/or IE6 related . . . ?

    Hi, Leif ~

One flaw of the KB article is that is does not work w/ GIFs.

As far as your query as to whether this is related to XP or IE, how dependent is OL in re to IE? Is it completely standalone unlike OE? Is it bulit on the IE engine? If the answer is yes, then I might suggest an issue that may parallel the index.dat mismanagement, caching or corruption issues occurring since IE5.

What doesn't work with GIF's? I just sent myself a test email with an embedded gif (235K) and I could only save it as a BMP (711K). Opened it with PE no problem...

My understanding is that Outlook is joined at the hip to IE wrt HTML emails.

    Hi, Leif ~

    Is it animated??

If OL is joined at the hip to IE wrt HTML emails, then you might try the purge/rebuild of index.dat files.

    Jefferson,
    Gave that a try, but since it was a attached email with the images (one of those AOL things), OE 6.0 removed unsafe attachments. <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/bwaaah.gif border=0 alt=bwaaah width=123 height=15>

"My understanding is that Outlook is joined at the hip to IE wrt HTML emails" if this is true, why would it work correctly in IE but NOT OL?

MY work around, forward the message to a pop3 account that you can access from the web, i.e., xxxxx@attbi.com, then open the message and then save the images (gifs). I tried a hotmail account and they were lost also.

Just tried a account at myway.com and it will work there.

    Hi, Dave ~

    <UL><LI>OE > 'Tools' > 'Options...' > 'Security' tab<LI>Uncheck 'Do not allow attachments...'<LI>'Apply' > 'OK'[/list]

Thanks, Bruce, forgot about that settings. I do NOT use OE except for "Newsreader".

    Sure, Dave <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

<img src=/S/jollyroger.gif border=0 alt=jollyroger width=29 height=18> BTW, since you mentioned it, Dave, I thought you might well be just the pro to know in which to endow me w/ a decent resource of how to understand & make proper use of newsgroups/newsgroup info.

I have only used HTTP and only recently have begun to generate interest in tapping into the wealth newsgroups may have to offer and am completely ignorant in first, what exactly the difference is in relation to regular web content and second, how to use it. I recently attempted NNTP access, but I got 86,129 messages downloaded to my inbox and freaked out.

I use some of the news groups at Microsoft and the fist time you join a group you will be hit with the catchup, which is a LOT of files. Now that MS has a web point to their news groups, you will not get the catchup when you first visit. I like the use of OE for when I am in the news groups.

Mostly I use the ones when I am testing for MS.

When I delete them, they reload when I revisit. Is there a way to prevent that?
