XP over 2000 Premium (SR1)

Would someone reading this post, advise me about installing Office XP Professional over Office 2000 Premium Service Packs. Some I've asked say it's ok, while others take the opposite view.

Will some kind soul, help me decide what to do?

Q - Is the Office XP an upgrade version or a full version? Upgrade versions can be cantankerous if they don't easily find their "qualifying product."

As for what might happen to the usability of FrontPage 2000, PhotoDraw, and other Office 2000 Premium applications (I'm assuming you didn't get the "special edition" XP), I'll leave that to more knowledgeable commentators.

Hi! It's a full version, you can bet your boots on that one.

I wouldn't do it Duchess. But you can try. Woody advised not to do it in a previous WOW and revisited it in the current WOW with a note from a power user/developer who does it. Also see these KB's:
290576 OFF XP: Running Multiple Versions of Microsoft Office
WD2002: Cannot Start Other Word Versions When Multiple Versions are Installed.

Last week in this section, a gentleman wanted to custom install PP2002 from his Office 2000 Pro into his Laptop that came with OEM Office SBE--which lacks PP. There should be no problem because he's not mixing Office components. As you can see from Woody's Watch there are people who do it; but a previous Watch advises against it I think because of problems that can come up because of mixing components and with older editions and very new ones. You want to put it in a different directory as she did, and only use one Outlook--probably your newest version.

You can backup, and always revert to one if it isn't to your liking. If you do it, please post how it's working out for you.

Good luck,

I don't think you understand what I'm trying to do. I wanted to know if I can install office XP over Office 2000? Using one at a time is all I can handle.

If you find a KB article on that question, I sure would appreciate your sending me the article number.

I think, when I installed Office XP, the installer removed the 2000 version before installing the XP version.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

That's the best news I've heard today. Thank you Dave, I appreciate it.
That's the way I'm going to do it.
If it doesn't work or I get error messages, I'll uninstall both and reinstall XP.

Post a message indicating how you fared with your upgrade - that way others can benefit from your expierence - I'm curious about the outcome of the extra 2000 components. Thanks.

Duchess--
I sent your question to a Microsoft Word MVP and got back this (from three separate MS Word MVP's) who all agreed:
_____________________________________ _______________________________

"Can Office XP be installed *over* Office 2000 Premium service packs?"

"Yes. It should 'upgrade' that way but personally, I recommend that you uninstall Office 2000 and then run eraser2000.exe (from the Office Support pages) to clear out the registry of unwanted remnants of 2000 before installing XP as a fresh install. Make sure that you back up important settings you may wish to keep such as macros and AutoText entries. It may over install, but like most programs it is best to uninstall old office and reinstall office xp using the custom install."

_____________________________________ _______________________________

Hope this can be of help.
