In which application does this occur? Word, Excel, ...?

    1. Word

When a document is opened, Word creates a small file in the same folder as that document. The name of this file is the name of the document but with the first two characters replaced by ~$, and it contains the name of the user. This little file is deleted when the document is closed. But if Word (or the PC) crashes, the file doesn't get deleted, so next time Word thinks the document is still in use. Search for files whose name starts with ~$ and if you're sure they don't belong to documents currently open, delete them.

    2. Word and Excel

Like many other applications, both Word and Excel create temporary files in the Temp folder. If they crash, these files won't be deleted. It is good practice to clear the Temp folder regularly. Make sure no applications (except Windows Explorer) are open when you delete files from the Temp folder. After an application crash, you may not be able to delete its temporary files, because Windows still considers them to be in use. Restarting your PC will take care of this.

Thanks, I'll try your advices. I din not mention that the files are usally accessed from a fileserver if that matters ?

That won't make any difference, AFAIK. The temporary files will still be created in the user's Temp folder; the ~$*.doc file will be created on the file server, in the same folder as the Word document.

BTW, ~$*.doc files are hidden. Make sure Explorer shows you all files.

Re: file already open off97 (Office 97)

Thanks, good point. I tend to forget to mention that, since the first thing I do when I get a new computer is set Explorer to show hidden files and all extensions, and then I don't have to think about it for a long time.
