problem opening public/personal folders (outlook 2000(office 2K pro)/win98

greetings from the great white north!

once again, i have a problem that i am certain can be solved by the combined brain power found here at the lounge.

here's the problem: i set up a personal folder, with name and password (which i wrote down, so as not to forget.) i then clicked on the +Personal Folders, and got the following message: ! Microsoft Outlook Unable to expand the folder. The set of folders could not be opened. The information store could not be opened.

i then tried to open the +Public Folders, and got the same error message. i would very much like to be able to access the personal folders, as there are things that i want to keep for my eyes only.

i have just started using outlook, as opposed to outlook express, which i have been using for over three years. it took me a while to figure out how to: 1. set the account up, and 2. get it to send and receive e-mails; now this. i have the darned program, so it behooves me to use it!

would all y'all please help me with this? it's very frustrating. i'd like to be able to make full use of this program, especially since i have been reading woody's rants about outlook express for a few years now, and want to stop feeling guilty about using it, especially when i change ISPs, and lose all my saved e-mails in the process.

thanks very much for your help. i look forward to seeing what your collective brain might comes up with. until the next time, take care and God bless all y'all.

Can you explain your environment and set-up procedure in a little more detail?

Do you have an Exchange Server account?

If I recall correctly, the first time you launch Outlook it presents a wizard to set up your e-mail services. Is that how you set up your PST, or did you create a new PST from inside Outlook, or did you use the Control Panel (Mail, or Mail and Fax)?

no, i do not have an exchange server account.

if i understand your question correctly, i set up a new personal folder from within outlook. to set up the folder, i used File, New, Personal Folders File (.pst)... . from there, i gave the folder a name, then a password, then i tried to open it, and got the error message that i posted.

i have had outlook installed for quite some time (over three years), and used it once before for e-mail when i had prodigy as my ISP, but found it inconvenient, so i just deleted all the folders and e-mail accounts, ignored it and went back to OE. as i said before, i decided to use it since i have it, and got messed up the very first time i tried anything out of the ordinary. i'm not even quite sure what my settings are, as i do not know where to look, but i do know that i answered your first question correctly.

hope i have answered your questions. if not, please keep on posting, and i will keep on answering. thanks for your time and your help. until the next time, take care and God bless.

i also forgot to mention that, when i started to set up the folder, i was asked if i wanted to archive my older messages. since i had no idea what was involved with that, i told the program no. don't know if that has/had anything to do with the error messages. sorry that i forgot to mention it before, but i just remembered it a few minutes ago. thanks again for your help. take care and God bless.

Sorry for the delay, I had to be off the Internet for a while.

When Outlook opens, it uses a particular PST file. If you have useful stuff in there, then instead of creating a new PST files, you can add folders into your existing file (view the folder list, right-click the top level under whichi you want the folder to appear, and create a new one). If you want to stop using the old one, then search your hard drive for .PST files and rename them. The next time Outlook starts, it will demand that you create a new one. Try it without the password first, just in case the password is the problem. If that doesn't work, then... hmmmm...
