Laptop Memory Ram Not Detected

I fixed my friends Gateway Solo 5100 Laptop. As per Gateway, the Max ram I can upgrade it to was 144. I bought two 64 Meg Ram chips for it. I installed it. But here is the problem, it only reads 96 Meg Ram. Do I need to do something in the Bios. Also I upgraded from win 95 to win 2000. Thanks for any help.

I'm just curious about how your supposed to get 144MB of Ram. Are you sure you have two sticks of 64MB? Maybe you have 64+32=96MB Ram. One of the sticks may be marked wrong.

how your supposed to get 144MB of Ram

It's quite possible there's 16Mb on board which when added to 2 * 64 in slots will equal 144. If that's the case, the plot thickens. Assuming the 16Mb on board, 96Mb is achieved with a 64 and a 16 in slots. What were you upgrading from? If 2 * 16, is it possible you've mixed up the memory?

I can only say, being the former owner of a 5100 and a 5150 that you are correct. On-board RAM is 16 meg. The stock machine shipped with 16 + 48.

My understanding is it only has two slots, so therefore you would have to have a 64MB and a 32 MB to = 96MB. So if you purchased two 64MB, maybe one was only 32MB. I have had that happen to me once. I purchased 256MB to find out when I got home it was 128MB . Even the stupid sticker said 256MB.

There may have been an oops with the RAM.
You should not need a BIOS upgrade, However due to the age of the laptop I would go ahead and do one.
Most likely you need to "reseat" the RAM one stick may only be making partial contact.
Another possibility is that the RAM you bought will not play nice with this notebook. That is VERY common.
I have had 256MB stick seen as 64 in one machine, 128 in another and not seen at all in a third unit.
I would suggest going to the RAM vendor web site and checking on which stick of theirs that is recommended for your unti and compare it to what you have.

Thank you all for your comments. Well I figured out the problem. It was a 32MB ram. The sticker said 64MB ram but it was wrong. I'm getting a replacement. Again thanks for your expertize, it's always a pleasure to hear from you guys. I always get great help.
