Extra blank lines (Word 2000 SP3)

I recently upgraded to Office SP3 and to Eudora 5.2, and now whenever I copy/paste some text from Word 2000 into Eudora, unwanted extra blank lines appear between paragraphs. This only happens when copying/pasting from Word to Eudora -- copying/pasting the other way or between other programs works normally -- so one of these two programs now seems to be using the clipboard differently.

Having analyzed the pasted text in WordPerfect using its 'Reveal Codes' function, I gather that the extra lines are caused by font codes and widow/orphan control codes produced by Word.

I have been using the 'Cleanse' function in the outboard ClipCase utility program to remove the formatting every time I copy/paste from Word to Eudora as a temporary workaround solution, but is there a way to prevent the unneeded formatting codes being included in the first place?

    Hi Murgatroyd:
Examining Word formatting in Word Perfect will not give you any information. The two programs work completely different & Reveal Codes is not relevant in Word. There are no codes that turn on & off like Word Perfect. Formatting is kept in the paragraph mark at the end of each paragraph & in section breaks.

SP3 should not have changed the way Word copies or pastes. In Word, do you have paragraph marks showing? You should & you can do so with the show/hide button on the standard toolbar or by going to Tools/Options/View tab/ & checking the radio button to show all. Make sure that you don't have extra pargraph or line breaks.

If you paste from Word into Notepad, do you get extra lines? If not, it must be some setting in Eudora.

Re: Extra blank lines (Word 2000 SP3)

Thanks for your reply, Phil. I have paragraph marks visible in Word 2000, and the text that I copy from it has only one blank line between each paragraph -- i.e. each paragraph is terminated by two consecutive hard returns.

If I paste the copied text into WordPad, Word 97 or WordPerfect, then it looks the same as it did in Word 2000, but if I paste it into Eudora 5.2, then extra blank lines are displayed between paragraphs. If I copy/paste text from WordPad, Word 97 or WordPerfect into Eudora, or from Eudora into any program, including Word 2000, then no extra blank lines are displayed -- they only appear when I copy/paste text from Word 2000 into Eudora 5.2. I didn't change any settings when I upgraded from Eudora 5.1 to 5.2, and no option that I change now corrects the problem.

Re: Extra blank lines (Word 2000 SP3)

I suspect that there is a conflict. I searched the Knowledge Base & found 4 articles that indicate there is a pasting problem with Word 2000 & Eudora 4.1. Perhaps the new problem hasn't been addressed yet.

Judging from the fact that there were conflicts in the past (although slightly different than the problem you mention), I don't think that it's anything that you're doing or that's unique to your computer. I know that's small consolation. I would try contacting Eudora support to see if they have a solution.

    Hope this helps,

Ayup, I am now using Eudora 5.2 too.

Eudora has never been much good for such pasting.

I find Eudora useful for sending Plain text.

You might get a better answer in the newsgroup comp.mail.eudora.ms-windows.
I include attachments for anything fancy, rarely will I use Eudora with Styled text.

Does using Word's "Paste Special" (unformatted text) not work?

Thanks for your reply, Howard. The reason for pasting from Word into Eudora is not to retain any styled text, but because the text is prepared using a form template in Word. In fact, I remove all formatting in Eudora before sending the message. Thanks for the links -- I'll check them out.

Thanks for your reply, Eowyn. Word's 'Paste Special' function isn't relevant, as I am copying from Word and pasting into Eudora, but if you meant Eudora's 'Paste Special' (unformatted text) function, that does indeed do the trick -- why didn't I think of that?! <:|

So glad it worked for you, even with my dyslexic answer.

Did you ever think that maybe Eudora since it is simple text is picking up the LineFeed/Carriage return as a double up?
I know that most programs nowadays accept the two part return. But, I've had some programs in the past particularly cross-system that separate those two, adding extra lines. <img src=/S/brickwall.gif border=0 alt=brickwall width=25 height=15>
Especially frustrating when trying to import data and your boss is standing over your shoulder. <img src=/S/toilet.gif border=0 alt=toilet width=24 height=26>
