Will WinXP recognize a 5.25 floppy drive? (WinXP Pro (SP-1))

I install the drive into my machine today and reset the device type in the BIOS. Once in WinXP, MyComputer correctly reports the presence of a 5 /14 floppy as B:. Trying to view the contents of a disk results in an ErrMsg: "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error." The DeviceManager shows both the 3.5 and the 5.25 as "working properly."

Any thoughts (apart from the obvious ones questioning my sanity for trying to do this)?

    I found a few things.
    #1. Check Cables and connections
#2. Floppy Drive may need cleaned
    #3. Floppy Data Disk Bad
    #4. Check Bios Settings
