HOTBAR (XP HOME)

Please don't anyone laugh -- I installed a nuisance program called HOTBAR. It has inserted itself everywhere in the browser/mail system. (I'm IE Outlook Explorer) One thing is that it 'suggests' places to go, things to buy on a tool bar. Don't like the g'kids to be tempted by the illustrated 'suggestion' to go to a porno site.

I want it out of my system, but don't know how to do it. Not in Add/Remove, or Start/Programs. Ad-aware finds a lot of HOTBAR ancillary programs but nothing that will uninstall. I'm afraid if I just delete all the programs found by A-aware then the system will just go down.

Anyone with the same trouble, thoughts?

Your not going to hurt your system by deleting Spyware that Adware finds. Delete all the Hotbar stuff that adware finds, as a matter of fact you should delete all the SPYWARE that Adware finds. Also download Spybot and run it to. It's freeware and it complaments Adware 6.0 You do have Adware 6.0 right?

    Re: HOTBAR (XP HOME)

Follow this link to Doxdesk's Hotbar Information Site for a good description of what Hotbar is and how to remove it. We had an accidental installation happen in the office, but we were able to find where it was listed in the 'Add/Remove Program' listing - 'Hotbar' was in the program name, but it wasn't listed specifically as 'Hotbar'. Perhaps we were lucky in removing it before it could fully infest the computer, but Add/Remove did a good job cleaning it out, though it did take us to the Hotbar site to an exit-interview type screen asking us why we were removing their fine product.

If this still doesn't work, I had also found a Hotbar-removal program. Unfortunately it is 224k uncompressed, 108k compressed, so it's too big to post here but emailing it wouldn't be any trouble at all if you would like.

Better still if you could provide a link to the download.

A little searching found this link to the Hotbar Uninstall Page. Note however that this link takes you to Hotbar's site. Here is the direct link to the uninstall program: http://www.hotbar.com/downloads/HbUninst.exe

I find it interesting that on the Hotbar page they suggest options other than uninstalling; actually a couple of ways to 'hide' Hotbar so you don't have to look at it but so that it can still perform it's spyware functions unhindered.

You can try to restore your configuration if you installed Hotbar recently. Go to Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | System restore, follow the wizard and choose the date before Hotbar installation. Remember: all programs (not documents) you installed after that date will be gone.

    Hi, Andy ~

Have you tried SpyBot? That will remove HotBar.

I would suggest before remcving anything with either Ad-aware or Spybot that you perform a scan and save the log file. Go to their forum sites and post the log file and have the mods/admins/experts give you direction how to proceed. Always make sure when using these products that the most current version of software is used and the most recent version of the reference files.

Why would you do that? It is simply a nuisance program.

    Re: HOTBAR (XP HOME)

That is assuming that Hotbar is only piece of spyware, malware, foistware etc on the PC there could be quite a few dataminer cookies as well. Sometimes the adware removal software will not remove the adware because they companies change their software, other programs maybe needed to prevent browser hijacking, recommendations how to safely remove all the spyware can be given, other programs can be recommended that don't contain spyware. In addition, like this forum you can learn a lot from the answers to your questions and others.

    Re: HOTBAR (XP HOME)

Thank you everyone. With all the suggestions I hit the machine with Add/Remove, AdWare, and SPYBOT. One or all of them seemed to do the job. HOTBAR is not coming up anymore anywhere -- though I still peek behind the monitor occasionally to see if it's still hidden somewhere.
