The PASS Command did not succeed (Mozilla 1.4a)

I periodically get this error message, which freezes Mozilla and requires a warm reboot to eliminate the message.

"The PASS command did not succeed. Mail server [and then it lists my mail server] responded: postoffice being serviced."

This is not a problem in Outlook Express.

I am using XP pro as my OS.

As much as I am satisfied with Mozilla I wouldn't use an Alpha version. You ought to uninstall and go with 1.3 or further back to 1.2.1

If you're brave enough to try Mozilla 1.4a, you should be brave enough to try Mozilla Thunderbird. Thunderbird is the Mozilla Mail stand-alone component. In addition, the bug you mention has been fixed in the recent versions. HTH

Boy, I really miss being able to search. Didn't I just read a post from you about Firebird as well? I can't find it if I did. The reason I ask is, if you are trying out those two products, I for one would love to see you post your complete comments on both of 'em. I love Mozilla and WOULD be willing to give the two separate standalone products a whirl but have avoided them, simply because of my pigheaded fright of so-called "A-level" software. Whatcha think, could you make a post, mebbe this board would be the best place since it's where the Moz users seem to hang out?

Hi, Unk ~

I came across this and thought you Moz fellas might find Minotaur/Thunderbird Help worthwhile. There are also direct links to the Phoenix/Firebird

Re: The PASS Command did not succeed (Mozilla 1.4a

The longer term goals of the Mozilla Project has long included releasing each of the components on a stand-slone basis.

Stand-alone Browser - Mozilla Firebird (formerly Phoenix)
This has been stable for some time. There only main two issues that ia have noticed in the last many months. First, clicking on a link (when the browser is not yet opened) tends to open two windows and not one (both full screen). Second, error messages sometimes arise when you close the browser. (This bug now seems to have been squashed.) Help, Extensions and other Customisations are mostly available here, although some useful stuff is also available here. The FTP site has both "nightlies" (in fact, ~weeklies) and past releases. Version 0.6 - the first under the Firebird name - is long overdue, and the "nightlies" are not quirky like the old Mozilla nightlies used to be. (The team is much smaller and releases are not so frequent.) It's your choice whether you use one of the "nightlies" or the 0.5 release. Make sure you read the pages on both Help sites about migrating/setting up your personal "prefs". You should be able to migrate your passwords etc on a trouble-free basis.

Stand-alone Mail Client - Mozilla Thunderbird
The trunks of these have been reassuringly stable. There has been some heavy work at footprint reduction recently. The only price paid for this is that responding to a "mail-to" hyperlink after the 28th April trunk doesn't seem to have been performing properly. The FTP site has only trunks. I have yet to have Thunderbird mess up my mail or crash on me. Help is on the same overall site as that for Firebird. You may be most comfortable with the 28th April trunk. As with Firebird, you should be able to migrate your passwords on a trouble-free basis. With a bit of patience (and a text editor/Notepad) you should also be able to migrate your mail settings also.[/list]HTH

Thanks for that good stuff. I haven't done any reading yet, but can the two standalone products be run on the same machine as a current Mozilla 1.x installation (co-exist) or would I be better off to put them on a separate machine?

Re: Mozilla Firebird & Thunderbird

B.A.D. - if you really want to go the whole hog, you can run Commmunicator 4x, Mozilla, Thunderbird and Firebird all on the same boot; using the same bookmarks and mail store. (I do seem to remember that there were "issues" in trying to run Netscape 6/7 from the same configurations, but that is another tale.) Remember, however, that you will have to duplicate your password stashes and your prefs configurations for the two new stand-alones.
FYI the "from the factory" setting for new mail accounts on Thunderbird is to leave messages on the server- to accommodate those of a nervous/misfortunate disposition. HTH

Hi Al:
Not to dampen your spirits on Mozilla (nor to hijack this thread), as I tried Mozilla & pretty much liked it. I was never able to set up the mail client properly, though. However, since I've been using Avant Browser, I really like it much better than anything I've ever used. It not only has the ability to have tabs, but to load sites in the background so you can load a forum & Ctrl+click on 4 or 5 links without the focus changing.
Just a few thoughts.

No sweat, Phil. I have been watching that thread where all you guys have been talking about Avant. I'm not sure I understand or fully agree with whatever problems you or Bruce or others have had with the Moz mail program. I have several mail accounts and haven't had any complaints about how Mozilla handles them. I miss my spell checker but otherwise don't have any major complaints about Moz. I love tabbed browsing but don't feel compelled to want to use it the way some of you do. I tried Pegasus for mail some time ago, with a lot of help and advice from Bryan but never could get used to the vagaries of HTML mail messaging, so I stick with Mozilla. I am going to try the two standalone products to see what they offer however, since I really don't have a pressing desire to have mail and browsing in the same software bundle. I guess this is what you'd call different strokes for different folks!

Hi Phil

I, on the other hand, had nothing but problems with Avant the two times that I've tried it.
Perhaps it's the OS, or the setup, or conflict with other programs, or whatever that cause the problems with some but not others, however, I've got no reservations, from my experience, recommending Mozilla.

Have a Great day!!!

Hi Phil,
The Firebird browser has an extension that loads tabs in the background. I do appreciate your point about the focus switching.
My version of Thunderbird has a green icon in the toolbar when new mail arrives - even a quick pop-up that tells me which account that the new mail has come into. This was also the case for Mozilla Mail 1.3 and earlier. Were there other difficulties on the mail client?

When setting up the mail server, instead of entering "username@earthlink.net", I just entered "username". It, uh, er, works now. All I needed was a .
