    No changes - asks me to save changes (Win2000 Off 97)

    No emergency today - just a "Why" question..

    I have a couple of spreadsheets that when I just open them, look at them, don't even
    touch a cell, then close it, it asks if I want to save changes.

    This occurs only on 2 or 3 spreadsheets. (Actually, it happens to a couple of Word documents also)

    I do not see a pattern of these particular spreadsheets having any differences with the ones that don't
    act like this.

    What should I be looking for to have the spreadsheet not ask me to save changes if I didn't make any?

    Thanks !!

    Do any of them have time or date functions like Today() or Now() or any other functions or links that may be updated on opening ?

    Such things cause a change and hence the request to save changes.

    How do you guys get so smart? <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

    As soon as I opened the spreadsheet, Bingo - NOW() is in one of the cells.
    So I gather every time I open it, the time has changed <img src=/S/dizzy.gif border=0 alt=dizzy width=15 height=15>

    Thanks a lot !

    Hi Michael,

    NOW() isn't the only function that exhibits this behaviour. So too do RAND(), TODAY(), AREAS(), OFFSET(), CELL(), INDIRECT(), ROWS() and COLUMNS() and any other volatile UDFs you might create.

    You could stop the prompt appearing unnecessarily with the following macro:

    Sub Auto_Open()
    ThisWorkBook.Saved = True
    End sub

    However, unless your workbook already has macros/UDFs in it, you would then have a macro warning prompt instead of the save changes prompt ...
    Choose your poison, so to speak.

    Cheers
