Synchronisation problems

Two in number: firstly, having gone from IE4 through the various service packs, then IE 5, then IE 5.01 SP1 and (as from yesterday) SP2, I found that my automatically-scheduled daily update has stopped happening (about six months back), and I have to do it manually every morning. No idea why.

Secondly, I can't find a way to get rid of no-longer-existing Favourites from the list of "Offline Web Pages" (mainly Year 2000 ones, actually). Can anyone give an idiot's guide on how to do this, please?

Re: Synchronisation problems

Hi John

Can't say I've got a lot of experience with synchronization. Have used the "make available offline" feature but mostly to save pages that I actually don't want to update (synchronize) so always choose the manual synchronisation property in the "make available offline" customization dialogue.

As for getting rid of, can't you just use organize favourites to remove those pages from your favourites list? I also picked up a shareware program from zdnet (I think) called Link Sweeper which checks all my favourites and bookmarks for broken/no longer existing links and cleans them out of the list automatically (if you choose). An additional feature is synchronization of favourites and bookmarks between IE and Netscape.

I don't know if this helps you a whole lot, but at least you know now that somebody has heard your cry for help! Sorry I didn't reply earlier but had hoped that there may be another lounger out there with more useful info than I could provide.

Re: Synchronisation problems

No expertise, but it sounds fairly straightforward (ha ha - Q196646).

By any chance, did IE change your schedule or change the setting to manual sync?

I don't use this, but it seems terribly clumsy to have to configure it favorite by favorite. Perhaps there is some shareware out there to make it easier.

Gladys

Thanks for your reply. The problem seems to be that the web pages no longer exist on my Favorites lists (long since deleted) BUT they still appear in the list of web pages to be syunchronised, and I cannot remove them from there. Right clicking on them gives "What's this?", not a menu which includes the Delete option!

Re: Synchronisation problems

Would that it were straightforward! I've changed the schedule time slightly in the hope that this will kick it off, but it's still set to synchronise daily on M,T,W,Th,F. I can't see anywhere that it's changed to Manual...

Re: Synchronisation problems

Ok, John, that's a horse of a different colour Have you checked your windows directory for a folder called "offline web pages"? I have one (am at work and therefore am on winnt but am assuming there is a similar folder in other windows versions). That folder contains the list of the pages you've made available offline and if you delete them from there they'll be gone from the synchronization list. I just tried this so I know it works. At least that will solve part of your problem.

Hopefully we'll get the rest of it worked out eventually as well. Will let you know as soon as I come up with other bright ideas.

Re: Synchronisation problems

Yes, I have such a folder (on NT4), but no, it's empty except for Desktop.ini. I've tried searching through the registry for "offline", without success, so might have to try "synchronize" and "subscribe". Slow, though. Thanks for your efforts! John

Re: Synchronisation problems

I may be getting somewhere! Under the registry key HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionWebCheck Store.1 there are a number of keys of the usual {something.something...} form, with the name of the page ain the default key. I shall try deleting one, then see what happens!

Re: Synchronisation problems

This gets curiouser and curiouser! Sounds to me like NT4 has gotten mixed up between the "offline web pages" folder and "temporary internet files" folder. I'm also on NT4 here and the desktop.ini file is in my "temporary internet files" folder (under winntprofiles"my userid"...) perhaps that list of offline web pages is in your temporary internet folder under your user profile? A long shot, I know, but now that I'm into this I hate to leave it unsolved.

Re: Synchronisation problems

Another thought - since you've upgraded to IE 5.5 and these pages are from before the upgrade - you may find them in the Channels folder of your favorites - saw something about that in the IE help section about offline viewing.

Re: Synchronisation problems

Hi Gladys
Not sure if you meant to, but in one of your posts you refer to the desktop.ini file. All folders you have customized with their own backgrounds to the file list have a desktop.ini file, so there could be hundreds of them all over your system. Sorry if you knew this already.

Re: Synchronisation problems

No need to apologize, Merc. I know I've seen multiple instances of desktop.ini but had never really paid much attention to where they are or wondered why they might be there. that's one of the things I like about this forum - you learn something new every day! Thanks for the heads up on that.

Re: Synchronisation problems

Leif, you're a hero! The first reference basically covered my problem, but it never occurred to me (rarely does!) to attack it using Windows NT Explorer (rather than Internet Explorer) on WINNTOffline Web Pages! I had already found this list of Offline Web Pages in the Registry at HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionWebCheck Store.1 but it always makes me a bit nervous deleting registry keys - worked, though!
