Run Office 2000 from server (Office 2000 sr 1)

My network person wants to have our users run Office 2000 from the Windows 2000 servers rather than installing it on the hard drives. The servers are dual processors and we have 100mb switches. We might have as many as 20 or more users accessing it at any particular time.

Is this a good idea? Is the license for concurrent users? Is this kind of license less than for a hard drive installation?

    Thanks.

I don't recall any license of this sort, and because Office is fragmented into many EXE and DLL files and uses a whole bunch of other resources on disk, I think it would not be a good user experience to run Office that way. I guess it wouldn't hurt to try it (for one user, I mean).

Are you intending to use Windows Terminal Services on the servers, if not then do you know how the users going to be able to run Office on the servers and display the output on their local PC?

    Hi,

Just tacking on to Stuart's answer; this would normally be done using Windows Terminal Services. To find out more, look here - the FAQs are a good place to start.

Before retirement, we used MS Office from the NT 4.0 servers. We had nothing but trouble. The templates were controled on the server and there was NO local copy of "Normal.dot" allowed. Local machine ran NT 4.0 also.
It was nice for upgrades, but who wanted to wait for the upgrade when one was in a hurry.

Also it required a special license to run from the servers and was big <img src=/S/money.gif border=0 alt=money width=17 height=15>. We went to local copies in about 3 months.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.
